Has anybody ever tried to remove or replace the barrel on a Soviet made 91/30? I was wondering how tight they are in the receiver? I have removed Mauser barrels before and some I had to weld the barrel to the bench because I could not get a tight enough grip on the barrel.
Thanks for any info on this. Lyn

From the lack of replies I'm guessing this has not been tried by those here. Are you just curious to see what it takes to remove one? Have you tried to remove it yet? Do you have a project going? Am I nosy? (sorry)

Hey Nv.-
Thanks for the reply! I was starting to wonder if the deodorant was failing.
I found where I can get a Mosin Nagant heavy barrel for $80 and I have a gun that a friend messed with so has little value for collecting.
Was this or find someone to turn down a barrel blank with a .308 bore for reloads only! Would have to mark it as a .308x54r on the receiver to make it safe.
Do you have any ideas?
Thanks

I heard they were a pain in the butt to get off.

you have to put in lathe and cut a groove from the front of rec about a 1/8"forward in barrel than take put in reciever vise and put in bolt so reciever doesn't twist and put pipe wrench on barrel with 3' pipe on that and wd40 or other lube .and have at it. this is the way i've done them they're on really tight.

remove the barrel and receiver from the stock. put the receiver in a vise upside down and see if it there is a plug installed where the barrel goes into the receiver ( some have them and some don't). ( there may be just a hole there) put some break free ( or something of you choice) in the hole and let it sit for a couple days and then do it again. let it sit a while. the longer it sets the easier it will be.

you will need a pipe wrench with a cheater pipe on it. if you heat the front of the receiver ( not enough to change the heat treating) it a little it will make it a little easier.

go slow and it will unscrew.

ps: i have never heard of a mosin nagant heavy barrel. that doesn't mean there isn't such a thing.

Ron gave good advice. Check for the plug. I think they are way more common on the earlier guns.

If you do like planning suggests with the light heating of the receiver, then at the same time wrap an ice pack(gel pack) around the barrel. You will get the expanding receiver and shrinking barrel. It will only last a few seconds.

I was thinking about the exact same thing when I saw the barrels listed by TGI. It says extensive fitting so probably isn't a simple swap in.

Would be interested in seeing anyone's finished project using one of these.

24" barrel is a little too short for a 91/30. I guess I will have to go with a new blank.:America:
