Is gunbroker the only reliable source for bayos? I need to pick one up but what's the difference between czech, yugo, german, etc bayos. I don't want to pay an arm and a leg and then find out I overpaid for a non-german bayo.

I have my Dads Duffle cut bring back. It's marked BYF44 and has the original sling and sight/muzzle cover. From the condition it looks like it was hardly shot, I'm working on another stock so i can shoot it.

To get a real German Bayonet for a reasonable price, go here http://1944militaria.com/k98_ammo_pouches.htm .
German bayonets are easy to spot....they are unlike all other Mauser bayonets. Not to mention they are waffenamted.
I gotta get better pics, but these 3 are fresh from the bluing tanks :)

For once a decent picture of mine.
1938, Plant 147, Waffen 359 & 214, 283 over the 'n', those double knives or harpoon heads or whatever they are, and the original eagle without the swastika under it. The stock also has its waffens, but they're somewhat difficult to read.
Oh, and an original sling.

My one and only "real" German K98k (not RC, not Yugo'd) is a 1939 dated 243 (Berlin-Borsigwalde) that I picked up 15 years ago from a pawn shop in Seattle for all of $100:

I've sold a few and picked up a few since this picture...
I've got one that is original blued....but still has a trigger group that is electro-pencilled. Haven't figured that one out yet??!?!

I got a bayonet now I just need a cleaning rod and sight hood. Got a link for those Tanker? I know the cleaning rods are hard to come by so I might give Classic Arms a call and pick up a repro from them. I may get some replacement grips for my bayo too as the wood on one side has cracked.

I forgot I need a sling too. I know IMA has repro's but if original stuff isn't too expensive I'd rather that. I checked Sarco and didn't see anything, IMA has no sight hoods.

I know it is not a K98 or German, but it is the only M98 type Mauser I own. Although, it was manufactured in Berlin for Argentina.

My RC K98 bought from AIM a couple of years ago. One of these days I might strip down the stock, but for now I'm keeping it in the red. The rifle came with a "frosted" or "dark" bore, but shoots quite well.

That grenade launcher makes it look like a .70 cannon.
She hated the idea at first but now likes the extra weight for stability.
Very clean bore, no wear or bulges, groups like a 98 should!

can ya tell i like s codes
I just got bit by the Mauser bug, or re-bit, I should say. I had a collector's grade that I couldn't stand to look at after a while, all blinged out. A year after I traded it, a few weeks ago (pretty much broke even) I picked up the two Mausers that you see below, both Russian Captures.
I picked the bottom one up first, a bcd 1941, and had to do some refinishing on the stock. A cleaning rod and sight hood should be here Monday or Tuesday. The top one is a bnz 1941 and is only cleaned up and coated with tung oil.

I posted some of these elswhere on this forum before I located this thread. Here is my 1943 JP Sauer und Sohn Russain Capture. Almost nothing matches on this thing. I scored 3-inch 100-yard groups with Surplus Yugo ammo. Bore is VG. I have a cleaning rod on order with Numrich (a 10.25 inch as a 12.5 inch was too long) and I am looking for a period bayonet.
This was my first purchase using my recently acquired C&R license. I don't know why I bought dozens of weapons before getting my collector's license. It's neat to have a rifle delivered to your door without a transfer fee. I Made a phone call to Southern Ohio Gun and had my rifle the very next day with no hassle or paper work (other than logging it into my bound collector's book).

Thnx guys, the cool thing is,the bolt is a 63 WaA correct dot,but it's a '43 issue, perhaps was mixed up in a company issued batch of K98s during a cleaning routine. I'd love to find the landser's gun that it got mismatched with!

When did they start putting the front sight hoods on? I have been looking around for a K98 but I am kind of picky. Shooter of course, but good conditon, can have some battle marks, Nazi eagles/swastikas (for authenticity, part of history), made from 1938-1942 when they didnt use stamped parts and good machining, front sight hood is nice - I like those but its not essential.
Some real nice rifles here, as always.

I believe the Germans started adding the front sight hoods in 1940 or 41. My first Mauser was a 1939 and it did not have the grooves/cuts to let a sight hood latch on. It would have had a muzzle cover instead of sight hood.

My first K98k byf 43 after cleaning the stock:

Nothing spectacular about it. Russian Capture.
The stock had a field repair (right behind the front barrel band).
It shoots very well.

here is my contribution. 44 bnz numbers matching. rebarrel by israel to
7.62x51 in 1958. no import marks. found at my local shop for $150. the only one that i have seen that has had the german proofs scrubed without the large 7.62 stamp and hebrew markings on the barrel. damn thing is a nail driver though.

Sorry, this is not a K98, but a Persian made 8mm Mauser carbine. Barrel about 17", it's a shorty - original, not cutdown and great condition. I have found production data on it being made in Persia (plus pictures). I am sure with German help. I don't know if these are common or rare. I really like it, so I guess that is what counts.

German K98 used by the Israeli Defense Forces after WW2. At sometime the Israelis had it converted to 7.62 by F.A.B. The German/Nazi markings were ground/buffed off and replaced by the Israeli crest and serial number. There is also F.A.B. markings on the rifle. From the large 7.62 stamped on the receiver and another 7.62 engraved on the stock they must have wanted to be sure the user knew it was no longer a 8mm.

I have wanted one of those Persian shorties for years. Either that or a GEW 33/40 which is the Czech gebergsjaeger gewehr or mountain rifle. Have you fired that thumper yet? How is it to shoot?
Buckshot
12-19-2011, 09:37 AM
The Czech made mausers for the Persians before setting up the Persians to make their own.
The late 1940s Iran's Taslihat-e Artesh (Arms Factories of the Army), popularly known as Mosalsal-sazi (the machine-gun factory), in Tehran started production of these Brno rifles. The needed machinery and know how was provided to Iran through the industrial firm Škoda, which had a long history of cooperation with Iran. Iran produced two models: the regular VZ24 rifle (similar to the German Kar98k, overall length 1110 mm) and the short version (similar to the German G30, overall length 993 mm) known as "Berno kootah" (short Brno). Of course I have the short Brno. I have not fired it yet, but it and a couple of others are on my short list to do so. A little carbine firing a 8x57 cartridge, it could be interesting, LOL.
ps. I bought it from a private collector, who is also a friend. He claims it is a pretty rare find in this condition.

Not a K98, but like the last one not sure where else to post this. This is just a good old Chilean calvary mauser. You can see it was stamped
on the receiver NATO 1961, which is when the Chilean military converted it to 7.62. It is a shorty, to show that I put a 16" Sig 556 next to
it. Barrel lenght is 17" and the barrel is pristine. It has been well handled, bluing worn and stock darken with use, but in excellant working
condition.

These were indeed 1937-41 German built K98ks built per contract for the Portuguese government, however war was looming and the Germans kept the lot for their own forces, but the Port. crest remained intact. I see what appears to be an import companies logo on the side as well(Orion). Very historic guns....

That's s great looking Mausesr there Huntless. I'll tell you something else about your photos. I lived in old WWII Wehrmacht Barracks in the early sixties. My post was named Panzer Kaserne. Our barracks had parquet wood floors that looked exactly like those in you photos. At least for me, that lends an air of authentcity to your pictures.
