Why is it?????
Why does everyone love 11.5" barreled ARs WITH A 5.5" flash hider attached? I understand loving them when they are SBRs with a birdcage or a 4" sound/flash moderator. Quite sexy and they make an effective close up SMG.

BUT with a permanently attached flash hider to make it 16", you are robbing yourself or performance. 11.5 inch ARs do maybe 2700 fps with M193 and 2600 fps with M855 ball. Problem is that fragmentation is not assured until 2700 fps, and rarely at 2600 fps. My M1carbine with SP ammo duplicates that kind of performance easily.

MY XM clone with a 16" pencil barrel and the birdcage is only 1.25 inches longer and gives about 3100 to 3150 FPS. That is reliable fragmentation from 175 to 200 yards. If you have to have the XM177 look, use a slip over like I did and get that extra 400-450 fps!

Enquiring minds just want to know. I see tons of them for sale on GB. Mine is a house/farm gun. I know it will work out to 200. Yes, if you use EXPENSIVE 75 grain TAP it may work, but mine works great with M193!

Well to answer your question all I have to say is I personaly have got some guns that I wanted to find out they were not what I wanted, So I sold them. I belive that as we find what works for us we will keep what we like. It like aim point or eotec. I have an eotec and I plan on getting an aimpoint. The best of both worlds! As long as we buy and sell we are making the economy better and like that.

In the corps I would shoot at the 500m target, in the off hand position, with a M16a2. I could hit the target with a kill shot every time. Now I have tried it with my M4 and can still hit the target at 500m but it might hit a little lower than I used to. With a scope I can do what I used to with irons. I do have a slip over flash hider for the look. If I were to get a 11.5" barrel I would then SBR it.

Usually to round out the collection. They look "right" for an XM177, even if the clash hider is just a tube, and not a low end can like the real one(and a little long,) and there's a lot less paperwork and it's $400 cheaper than an SBR with the real muzzle device.

I'm planning on just SBRing my next one with an 11.5" and a BattleComp1.0 for starters, FWIW.

What OP said, is the reason I built one. I since found out that I think I like it better for shooting coyotes. Doesn't seem like it is going to be as hard on pelts. Maybe it's the slower speed, maybe just my imagination, but just doesn't seem to rip them up as bad. I'll know more when winter rolls in.

I like mine with the M4 look never did like the long flash hider for same reasons you stated. If i were to get a 11.5 in barrel it would have to be a SBR.

I had a sleeved over FH that went on a 16" tube but looked like the 11.5" with the long FH.
