View Full Version : Romanian Barrel Pin

I found something helpful yesterday and thought I would share.
I have been stripping some Romanian AK kits. I had a few that I couldn't get the barrel pin to budge. To push the pins out I was using a grade 8 bolt that I had chucked in the drill press and cut down to about an inch and a half. To start the pin, I would use a shorter piece of the same bolt, but usually only about 1/2" long. Worked well with my 12T press, with exception of about 4 or 5 kits.

I usually am a little leary about Harbor Freight stuff, although I end up there often.
It was a 9 PC PUNCH AND DIE SET, Part # 95547.
This punch set looks nice and works well. I was able to press out the problematic barrel pins on the first try. Sometimes you have to do what you can to get the pins out. This seems to work well.

I thought it was a little pricy, but it has paid for itself already.

Hope someone can get some use out of this info.

Thanks Bill. I started claening one yesterday, and got to the barrel pin, and it wouldn't budge. Not even with my biggest hammer. My friend has a press, and so far I've manegd to get around it, I knew sooner or later I'd have to use it. Thanks again for the clue.

If you use those with a press, you might want to have a piece of steel in between the hardened steel pin and your press end...

Somebody on one of the forums makes a steel "cap" that fits over your press face, so you don't dimple it with these hardened pins.

Tailgunner makes the best barrel pin punch press adapter that I've ever seen. I dont know all the forums he's on, but back when I got mine I had talked with him on gunco.

I got one from Tailgunner over at the AK Files (http://www.akfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11636), and it still wasn't easy.:thelook:

Somebody said the Romanians headspaced their rifles with the barrel pins in. This is why they're so hard to get the pins out of...

At least you aren't cratering your press face

Some pins are just a bitch to get out. Personally, I've never had one I could remove with a hammer, no matter how much I beat on it. Maybe I need a bigger hammer :D I've definitely had a few that scared the crap outta me when they finally broke free though!

This kit includes the barrel press kit and the barrel pin punch kit.
It's the only one I've ever used

I punched some shims out at work for a friends 10-22. I bought some in a kit but they were easy to make with the punch kit. Plenty of other uses too.

Next time you get the pin under pressure on your press, smack the jackplate a sharp rap with a 4lb hammer, works EVERY time. I have done 20 kits of all kinds with a 6 ton press.Told Perro about it and he said it works well for him also.
