alright guys i picked up a mauser bayo so i could stick pigs next time i hunt them with my good 'ol 98k
question: how the heck am i supposed to get all the cosmo out? it looks and smells a spent travel sickness bag everytime i pull the bayo out!!! now i don't know how to clean it unless i use water, and i don't want to leave water in it so it rusts.
i've cleaned cosmo before, just not like this, how the heck am i supposed wipe it out? it's stuck like peanut butter&jelly to bread

Put it in the oven on low heat. Make sure you have foil under it.

wd-40, mineral sprits, ed's red, etc
i use mineral spirits, you can put it in a metal container or pie tin and let soak, it will dissolve the cosmoline

Brake cleaner dissolves cosmo. Comes in a can under fairly high pressure and comes with a plastic "straw" so you can get it into small places. Dissolves it quickly and evaporates completely and doesn't leave any residue. Makes it ideal for cleaning out your bayonet scabbard.
Just stick the straw in as far as it will go and hose it down. Be careful it doesn't splash back into your face, also probably do it outside as a liquid brake cleaner / cosmo solution will come pouring back out the open end of the scabbard.
Just keep spraying until the cosmo is gone. Probably use the whole can of brake cleaner but it's cheap (usually in the neighborhood of a buck to a buck-and-a-half at Fleet Farm).
It's what I've used to clean out my Mauser bayonet scabbards and it works great and also easy (I'm lazy and I like easy). Brake cleaner can do nasty things to wood and wood finishes though, so you want to use care or maybe something else to clean the bayonet itself, unless you unscrew the wood grips and set them aside.
