Can you fire slugs from a standard barrel? If the barrel has a choke, does the choke have to be removed first?

I did when I was a kid and I'm still here to tell about it. Full choke single shot. Not sure if it is really "good" for the gun though.

No need to remove the choke the the slug will do that for you.
Just kidding you can fire slugs threw a normal shotgun barrel but you will not have the sights to aim with it will be point and shoot nor will it shoot as straight as a slug barrel, it is best to remove the choke when ever possible as to not damage them.

I have shot many 12ga full choke slugs, If you have a removable choke tube then use a cylinder or modified tube. But if it is not a removable choke it will work fine, but a full choke is going to hurt the shoulder some. Do not shoot slugs in any thing tighter than full choke,ei extra full, super full, etc.:America:

I'm guessing this means, don't shoot slugs from a saiga smooth bore?????:nonono:

I would. But, then again, I would slice Habanero peppers with bare hands and then use the bathroom...

Like many have said, just make sure it's not a really really tight choke. I run Mod or Light Mod in mine and have no problems with slugs, just make sure the choke is still tight every now and then.

Personally I would not shoot with out a choke in place, as you're asking for that slug to take some of your threads with it with nothing there.

I shoot slugs out of a moss 12, 500's. But no choke at all, just a smooth barrel. Slugs stop people well. Shot/Slug alternating pattern in a pump action is pretty common around these parts for bed guns.

I do the same in my Remington 1100 full choke. Just a little more push is all. I have never heard of a full choke splitting that was in good shape due to a slug.

My Saiga manual said my gun could shoot any shot shell through it, 2 3/4 or 3". I have only fired bird shot though I plan on using my 2 round mag for a deer gun someday.

I know for a fact if you have a smooth barrel you must use rifled slugs and if you have a rifled barrel use sabot slugs as the plastic jacket will conform to the rifling and stabilize it. If you use rifled slugs in a rifled barrel, the grooves wont line up correctly and ruin your barrel. Sabots in a smooth barrel will be very inaccurate and cause the sabot to tumble. (I have personnaly seen this, it left an hourglass shaped hole in the target.

To the original question, alot of guys here say yes, but I will have to disagree. Will it go bang and hit something down range? Yes. Will it hurt the choke/gun/yourself? Deffinetly not good for any of the three listed. A choke might have some portion of the inner diameter just the tiniest bit thicker than the rest, or maybe it has a slight dent; a slug going through would be thrown off for terrible accuracy at best. Worst case it would banana peel your muzzle, or send fragments faceward.

With slug specific barrels and shot barrels on the market, I would recommend shoot only what the barrel says to shoot out of it.

Oy Vey, shoot anything you want from it, the only caveat is if it's a removable full choke I don't do it. If the choke is part of the barrel shoot it and see how it works for you. You might have to try a few different kinds to find one your gun likes but mostly they will do fine.

I find my choked guns, (especially IM, M and IC do best), and all of them do better than my 2 shotguns with chamber bore at 50 yards. One with IM choke and the other with a full choke give me 4" groups at 100 yards shooting Brenneke slugs and slightly better with Foster. The rifling on the slugs will swage down in the choke causing no harm to choke or slug and from my experience with all of my shotguns improve the grouping. The rifling was initially thought to cause the slug to spin but that was not the case, what it does do is make them more accurate from choked guns. To much over thinking on this problem. It wasn't a dumb question at all.

To tell the truth the only thing I will not shoot through a full choke is buck shot, the patterns are terrible past 25 yards and not all that good after 10 yards.
