View Full Version : cimarron schofield soon to be mine
So I purchased a Cimarron Schofield through a trade deal. Ever since I saw one in 3:10 to Yuma, I've wanted one. Badly. The price tag on a new one has always been one that is out of my reach, especially for a handgun. But alas, through a trade I am getting one.
My question I guess is, who has one? and any tips or suggestions for ownership?

niceee!!pistola!!what calibre is it?.45lc or ,45schofield?Appears to be .45 Colt, but it could be used to shoot the .45 Schofield.
The pistol is in .45 colt. For money's sake I kind of wish it were .357/.38sp, but that just wouldn't feel as authentic. at least .45 colt has the same two numbers as .45 schofield haha

what movie is that from? I looked up a list of people who carried Schofields, and the fact Jesse James carries one makes me even more excited to have one

That is from "Unforgiven". Like many others, I would like to have one too.

As I think about it. Didn't Bill Ford was a Schofield to kill Jesse James?

Yeah funny story. The story goes that Jesse James gifted Ford a nickel-plated Schofield, with which Ford turns around and kills James. All this is in the movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which I actually haven't seen aside from the scene where Ford is given the shmancy schofield
Thats a fine pistol!:icon_biggrin:

I was talking to a guy locally that shoots at SASS "Cowboy shoot" he was holding one of those, I became interested in one because not only do I like the way they look I like the way they feel in a big hand, I guess the grip is Beasley like.
I love my RUGER BH but I have two fingers that hang off the grip..:icon_neutral:

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is a great movie, by the way, as is Unforgiven. I highly recommend them both.

That is a good movie. Another one of my westerns I don't get to watch. To violent for small kids and wife doesn't like westerns.:icon_neutral:I remembered the scene in it, and though it was correct. But wasn't sure if it was or not.
I finally got to take the Schofield to the range. I bought a box of cowboy loads. I don't know a whole lot about single action guns and their ammo but it seemed very mild. At least milder than what I expected.
The gun shoots well. They all landed in the same area. However, that area was lower than point of aim. I shoot pistols a lot so I'd like to think I'm not just aiming the pistol incorrectly. Maybe I need to find a way to lower that front blade. I still love it.
I snapped a few shots of it whilst it sat on the bench.

A File? How much lower? It could be set up for a different range how far away were you.
It looks fantastic BTW.
That was .45 colt?
I had a Ruger Vaquero in .45 Colt one of the first ones, man that thing was sweet. I was surprised that the sight were dead on for me a 15 yards. I could hit anything with that.

Those cowboy loads are pretty well squib loads with very low velocity. a good handload that is suitable for the Colt Single Action Army would likely bring the point of impact up. DO NOT USE A HOT LOAD in the Schoefield, just the same loads suitable for the Colt SAA.
I think the front sight is pinned. If so, you can take a 5 cent piece, AKA a nickel and flatten it out with a hammer, the file and polish to make a really nice front sight to any height you want. Brass or other metal can be used.
I do this on my black powder Colts to bring the sights and groups together.
Or as said, if that is the load you will use, simply file the front sight down to bring point of impact up.

Beautiful Schofield dpoe; certainly on my list as well, glad that you were able to finally score one! Yeah, and .45 Colt has to be the only way to go!
Thanks Hickock. I think I'll pick up some non-cowboy load ammo next time and see how it shoots and try it at different distances.
This time around I just wanted to actually shoot it and make it go BOOM so I only bought a box of 20. It was mostly at 7 yards and then a little at 10. At 10 it was still a little low.

Dpoe your welcome! I shoot alot of .45 Colt as I own two New Model Vaqueros. THese revolvers require the standard .45 Colt load too, a 250 gr. bullet at about 850 to 900 fps.
Some of the "Cowboy loads" are only going about 650 to 700 fps.
The standard .45 Colt load is a powerful cartridge. It is the original "man stopper!"
Again, do not use any hot .45 Colt ammo made to be shot in the Ruger Blackhawk or Freedom Arms revolvers.
Remington sells a very good .45 Colt load that I have used that duplicates the original blackpowder ballistics.
The standard .45 Colt load will handle anything you will ever need a handgun for. It kills deer very nicely too!
That is one beautiful revolver!

Its interesting you said you shot low with this, I shot my Ruger BH with cowboy loads in it yesterday and all my rounds hit low and I mean low, I discovered the rear site is adjustable but I am not too sure if its me or not yet just needing to learn how to shoot a revolver compared to a semi auto.

Yeah, it shot really low. I'm going to try different ammo and see if it shoots higher. I've shot a lot of different pistols so I figured I know how to use sights haha. but it may be me.

Hickock is dead on, try different ammo. Back in the blackpowder days they did not file down their front sights, they increased the powder charge to get the gun on target. If you reloaded you could use this method to your advantage. If you do not load your own try different ammo before you start messing your front sight blade up. I love GOEX.
