I heard a report on the radio this morning regarding the arrest of a man in Pasco County, FL, about an hour north of me, so I decided to investigate via the web.
His name is Charles Earle Duffy
He is either 69 or 70 years old, either was or was not armed when the police arrived (this apparently was a "suicide by cop" attempt), and the investigating cops either found machine guns, or machine gun parts in his home. A police Detective says that they would have been outgunned...
He was either "Baker Acted", or arrested, and if arrested, is being held on either $5000 or $10000 bail (you can't bail out of a Baker Act commitment).
The radio report said the seizure included at least one FA .50BMG, which I didn't find mentioned anywhere, including the radio station's own website. That website (www.970wfla.com) says that he was "taken into custody", which could mean either arrest, or Baker Act, and may really signify that they just don't know. AFAIAC, that radio station is THE radio station for news in the area, and, apparently, they suck at it, too.

(Sigh).

When people get old some lose it, not always in a bad way. It is hard enough to get them to realize that they cannot safely drive anymore let alone start thinking that people should relieve them of their firearm collections. Maybe if we actually cared for our elderly and visited them more frequently things might be a little better for everyone.
