I had found a SVT-40 for sale locally and decided to pick it up. The rifling is strong and sharp, but the bore is a little dark (which has been getting better after each cleaning). I also re-touched some bluing around the front end and it now looks great. I took it out this morning for the first time and after sighting it in at 100yds, I placed one of those "color changing" targets over my old one and fired 50rds from 100yds using the iron sights. Not too bad for a Soviet semi-auto. Sorry for the bad picture of the rifle, the batteries in my camera died so I will have to buy more before I can take better pictures.

That's great shooting. I think the SVT40 is harder to shoot well than a garand or most any bolt rifle due to cheek slap. But they are great looking rifles. What ammo were you you using?

I was using Hungarian light-ball surplus.

Treadhead, do you happen to have a gas adjustment tool? I ordered one back in March, but still haven't gotten it. Mine won't cycle, but I'm damn glad to see yours runs nice :)

Also, you can host pictures here, just simply attach them to your post it and autouploads.

I used a leatherman. My gas adjustment knob is kinda loose (it does almost a quarter turn every twenty rounds) so the leatherman can adjust it w/out hurting the metal. Any idea how to tighten it down? Thanks for the tip about the pictures...I'll try it out.

Mine did the same thing. I took it to Sledgehammer Arms Works and Randy said there was a small ring or something missing. He fixed it for a few bucks and it shoots like a top.

Mine shoots pretty low for some reason. I have to jack up my sight to several hundred meters in order to get dead center at 100.

I enjoy shooting it. However, forget about buying extra mags. Bayonet cost me nearly $200 too.

Yes, the cheek slap can bite you. Gotta hold it snug..

They're fun curiosities. You get stares and questions at the range. My last range trip someone asked me if it was an SKS.

Is your stock shellac treated? Mine isn't and I think M1 Tanker's isn't either. Can't tell if mine has been sanded or if it was shellac free from the beginning like M1s was...

Yes, it has a really nice shellac coating on it. +1 on the low shooting. I had to bring the sights up to the 300m range in order to get that grouping at 100m. Oh well, it is really fun to shoot...and mine was also confused for an SKS at first.

No Planning, you were out by the time I wanted one. I ordered one in March from a gunsmith that makes them, but never received it. I reordered it today and he promised to have it in the mail tomorrow. I believe they were $14.95.

to the guys saying its shooting low... you can always file down the front sight blade until it shoots dead center at 100 yards on the correct setting...

typically a battle rifle like that will shoot high at 100. Thats a little odd that they shoot low.

The SVT I shoot (belongs to a friend) shoots a few inches high with a 6 oclock hold, and will hit a chest sized target out to 300 yards with the setting on the lowest and a center mass hold.

I wonder if the front sights were replaced in an arsenal rebuild and they were ever filed to get them shooting on after the refurb.

Where is the gas adjustment knob on the SVT and where can you get the tool for it?

Jim Balogh of Black River Gunsmithing (440) 458-5396 makes them.
Call him m-f 10-5 eastern time.

Thats where I got mine XO. The adjustment is at the front of the front sight.

Goto www.surplusrifles.com and look at thier SVT40 section.

thanks

that was where I go the instructions to break it down for cleaning

Do they use Mosin SLings or what slings were used?

No, its more like a PPSH sling...but the SVt had it own sling. They are rare and pricey, so a PPSH sling might be a better deal.
