Two questions: Does the stock Bushmaster FH just screw off? and second when I get it off what is a decent one to replace it with?
This dang thing is ported so it punches you in the face with muzzle blast.
If there a variations in what they put on new at Bushmaster, it is the one that has round holes and is about half again as long as a mil-spec one.
Thanks

Sounds like you are talking about a muzzle brake, not flash hider. The muzzle brake has round holes or rectangular slots (ala AK 74). The flash hider has eliptical slots that run length wise. If you are talking about a muzzle brake, it is likely blind pinned and or silver soldered (post ban configuration) If you are talking about a flash hider, 1st check the length of the barrel without the flash hider. It should be 16" from breech face to muzzle. You can use a cleaning rod. Close the bolt on an empty chamber, insert the cleaning rod into the muzzle til it stops at the bolt face. Make a mark with a sharpie marker on the rod at the end of the flash hider. Take the rod out and measure it. Substract the length of the flash hider. There are some Bushmasters with barrels shorter than 16" (14.5"?) that have a permanently attached flash hider to make the barrel length = 16". If this is the case, the flash hider is also silver soldered/blind pinned and is not worth the effort.

I have seen nearly identical Bushmaster carbines with M-4 type barrels, some with 16" barrels and removable flash hiders and some with 14.5" barrels and permanently affized flashhiders. If one looked closethere was a different amount of barrel forward of the step cut (for grenade launcher) and a different length flash hider.

Proceed with caution!

I think pre-ban and post ban will deturmine if you are attached with threads or soldered/pinned. During the ban threaded muzzles were part of the evil features, thus some guns had brakes that could be removed from a milled groove in the barrel too. Might just be a timeing problem if its removable. Do you have threads and can you unscrews the brake and nut if you do?

This is my son's rifle. I do know it has milled flats and what looks like a crush washer possibly. I'll take a pic of it next time I see him.
And as far as FH vs MB, I understand the difference. Just used to calling anything added on the end of a barrel a FH. A bit of quiet protest for the govt interference. :America:
