I used Apex M64 demilled receiver pieces for this one.
Front section was already threaded onto barrel and included
lavish lug area. So it was a cinch to put this together.

I use gas shielded MIG, .024" mild steel wire.
I get the beads blazing red hot and let air cool.
Always have had great success with this method.
Let me emphasize...no failures from 11 rewelds to date.

The main struggle is to re-establish alignment of the pieces.
I'm not big on clamping, I tack, inspect, cut tack out if necessary and
realign, tack again. I use a good straight edge.

The pics are of the roughed in welds. Clean up is the next step.
I will keep you posted on progress to finish.

Excellent job. I've done a couple of milled rebuilds and used .050" or larger bent blank sections welded in to salvage the milled look because at the time these cut receivers weren't around.
After seeing some of the welded up demills I've been considering doing them over with these cut sections.

Very nice! There is a guy over on the Weapons Guild "Brooklyn Beer" who is doing rewelds using a little fluxwire unit, I don't know how he does it but he has made some really good looking rewelds. It is almost enough for me to attempt it. I have a saw cut Romy front end I was going to use for a different project, but now I may start looking for some receiver sections just for the hell of it.

Yes, I've done it both ways. The M64 profile requires some sheet
overlay to get the lightening areas on the LH side. I was happy to
get the pieces and give it a try. I think it will look more authentic.

I have corresponded with Brooklyn Beer over on WG.
He's very motivated. Doing some real self taught welding.
That's basically how I picked up welding with MIG.
Just jumped into the challenge of building with both feet.
I am going to be honest about the mig. One can learn to do some
very exquisite things with it, things that simply are not in the welding
manual. :icon_biggrin:

Well....You got my curiosity aroused with these chopped receivers and I got one in today. This one has one of the locking lugs carved somewhat, but in for a penny in for a pound is how I see things. I'm going to put it together even though my rule of avoiding anything with questionable locking lugs will go out the door........I've been bored lately and this challenge shall help alleviate that issue. If I change my mind everything else on it is in fine shape and I'll just cut the good front end off of the hybrid rifle and use these pieces to return it to something more on the lines of original.

Easter bunny was busy today.
I like the worn finish, I may touch it up to reduce the shine,
but I favor the rough. It shoots real nice btw.

I dabbed on some Caswell's Black Oxide gel.
This does some nice uniform blending of color of old and new.

More details on cleanup please!!!! Much better than mine! All I have is a dremel and less than steady hands:(

I used a 4" angle grinder to grind the beads, used some large and small files to
get it down to a level where you can hand sand it smooth.
The dremel is great with a cutting disk for rail area cleanup.
(use the Forney cutting disks, dremel disks are a joke.)
I also use an oblate carbide burr for the interior.

Black oxide gel???? Is this anything similar to tooling black? My machinists(out side contracts) make parts and dip it in liquid that doesn't come off. I can't get it in this plant due to FDA, etc.. and can't buy it at home. Can the gel be bought and delievered to a home? Is it "idiot-proof"?

I got the 4 oz gel kit.
A little goes a long way.

I'm not at all familiar with tooling black.

I want to get some because it seems to last very well. I have lots of metal/metal contact iin my line of work and it doesn't scratch, wear, or fade. It needs to be tried on a firearm. It comes out a nice medium flat black and is not shiney unless the metal is polished first. I've got to figure out how to get it. MSC, etc. won't send to a personal addy.
