Just read that our Congress Critters still can't seem to get it together on immigration. Just sent an email to all my Reps saying that first priority is to close the borders and the second is to decide what to do with those illegals already here! I also said I don't understand the problem if we proceed like that! Obviously, I just am too dumb to understand!

Personally I don't understand why our immigration policy needs reform.
We currently have a policy in place, and we have laws in place too.
What we do NOT have is enforcement of the current policy or laws.
Immigration reform is a joke. We simply need more INS agents and border guards. Enforce the current standard rather than "reform" the standard so low that it does not exist.

If the existing laws are not being enforced, why would any new laws be enforced? What in this bill would keep us from being in the same boat 5 years from now? I say first we secure the borders, otherwise any new laws will be meaningless. Then, after the border is under at least some semblance of control we can then talk about what to do with the illegals already here.
The only laws that seem to be enforced are the ones that deprive honest folks their rights. Laws depend on "honest" folks following them. Enforcement of said laws is weak at best and sometimes it is harder to enforce laws on criminals than it is to just let them go.
What the heck is a few illegals????? Heck invite a few more in. Congress and immigration will never mix, and never resolve anything. It just ain't gonna happen. It is just another thing to distract folks from the real news.

Whats probably is going to happen is we will eventually have great border security. Thanks to Mexico not wanting anyone to cross the border back into Mexico after our economy crashes.
I have really cut down how much news I watch on telivision since the important news of the day is "Paris Hilton". Okay who is it who is so obsessed with her anyway? Its not me, none of you right?
I can imagine some day when I am very old, when hopefully saner times have come. I just hope future generations don't think this lunacy had anything to do with me. Just because some one lived through a crazy time doesn't mean they were nuts.

-->Ding!
I think thw whole thing is to keep lawmakers employed...they're the ones who must be made to fear the populace...mebbe wh publicly execute a few, for emphasis?

want to know something odd, because of all the presidental canidates, agents are going to be taken off the border to provide more security for the presidental canidates! how ironic when they keeping making border security a huge issue! and the secret service is allready over budget due to the large number of canidates!

I say we need to close the borders and place more guards there so every inch of them can be seen. If anyone jumps across the border then shoot them. Just make sure you put up big signs in different languages so there is nobody saying I didn't know. The illegals we have in the US should be rounded up and sent back. I would send their current employers with them and use their money to pay for it.

Hope our beloved reps are reading these replys. The laws they need are already there! Use them and get off your butt!

Didn't we already try the amnesty route when Reagan was in office? All it did was reset the count on the number of "other than legal visitors". I totally agree with everyone that has said that new laws won't make the slightest dent in the way things are. If we can't enforce the relatively simple laws that are already on the books, what would lead us to believe that making new, more complex, laws would change a damned thing?
Border security has to be in place to at least reduce the influx of illegals. I'll bet a months pay that as soon as there is a real amnesty deal is struck we'll see a surge in the number of people trying to cross the border in an attemp to be included in what the deal is.
There are a few things we can do which will make being an illegal in this country less attractive.
1. We stop offering social services. Americans citizens first.
2. If you're here illegally, any children you give birth to in the US aren't automatically made citizens.
3. If an employer is found to be hiring illegals then he is heavily fined and has to pay full back taxes on the estimated wages he's paid out. The employer has 90-120 days to pay all back taxes or the business is siezed or at the very least a lien is imposed.
4. If you are in the country and commit a felony, you are forced to do the FULL sentence and then you're deported.
5. Make English the official language of the United States. Drop any requirements that signs, postings or government publications be made available in languages other than English.
I could go on an on but these would be the top five and would go a long way to making it less attractive to coming here.

^^^These ideas all sound good to me BTW.
Amnesty didn't do a bit of good in 1986 and it won't work now...we already tried this. Actually it's made it worse since then.
If we only enforced the existing laws there would not be a problem to begin with. Instead of aiming our anger at the illegals we need to aim it at those in our government that choose to ignore the people's will.
Like I said, all the new laws in the world are not going to do a bit of good if we don't enforce them and if the existing laws are being ignored by our elected officials there is nothing to make me believe that these new ones being proposed would ever be enforced either.
It would never do any good to deport someone if the border is left as it is because they'd sneak right back in. So I say first we need to take control of the border first and foremost.

Since the goverment won't do anything, we could just not do business with companies that hire illegals. This whole house of cards does depend a bit on us cooperating with it.
