Does anyone here have a 91/30 sniper? I've got an ex-sniper and am seriously considering putting a correct-type mount and scope on it. I haven't shot it enough yet to see if it even holds a decent group but for some reason I want to pursue this. Of course I'd check the grouping before investing the time and money. It looks easy enough. My ex-sniper has two serial numbers lined out near the rear sight on the left side and a great big "L" looking symbol between the date and Iz stamp so I know who made it and it had 2 different scopes on it at some point. $105 for the complete mount and I'll shop for the best price on the scope when I get ready.

drine,
i have been gathering up parts to do several. i have one ready to just screw the scope and mount on it, but just not gotten around to it. someday maybe.
the search for parts is the most fun with them. here are four of them i have been gatherning parts for. i have a few more i just have not done anything on yet.
i do have one that is completed.

note that the 2 blonde stock rifles are different rifles.

we have done several reactivations of ex PU snipers.

There are 2 plugs, and 2 screws that need to be removed from the left side of the receiver, and 1 section of wood that needs to be knocked out. You can use denatured alcohol to break the bond on the wood glue that they used, and then just reapply shellac to the area that the denatured alcohol stripped.

one thing you need to know is that they used 3 different sized mounts, and you are going to need to take accurate measurements of the pins/screws to know which size mount to order. It is NOT a 1 size fits all mount.

Good luck

Nice Blondes there Ron!
I've read up on the mounts. I'll probably get a machinist friend to redo the holes then measure unless the inside can be measured well enough.

I have got to get back to that little shop over near OldPaint's stomping grounds. I need to look through the other cases he has as I promised him. I'm still curious about the Big Star I saw on some. Tula maybe but those were the ones I thought were made in the 50's which you say can't be. He had those for 149 because they were like new.

I know that the rifle I did, the holes did not match any of the mounts avalible. Also those pins and screw that they ground off, weren't easy to get out. You can buy a compete rifle for the cost of just the scope and mount, I would go that route unless you just want the experiance of building it.

$90 for rifle, $75 to mod my bolt, scope and mount $250ish, I agree, it can be bought cheaper. I'm still in the thinking process and you have me thinking WBC.

the last tula russian 91/30 were made in 1944
i usually keep any of the tula 91/30's i find.

you may have seen some that are called MO rifles they were re-stamped with a 50's date on them. if you find some of them grab them and hang on to them.

Eastern Europe M91/30's
Albania 1961
Hungary 1950 thru 1954
Poland 1951
Romania 1955

there is a lot of information out there, but little is still know on some of the marks/stamps, so when i find something that is odd i buy it and try to track down the meaning. sometimes it is common but sometimes it is not.

Just trying to save you some of the headache I went through brother :)

Now if you shoot it and it's a real tackdriver, it would be worth scoping it.

I have an original matching serial number PE sniper(Tula). It is a real tack driver and is one of my favorite guns to shoot. I believe the scope is orginal as the screw heads are the rounded ones. Anyone know where I can get a repro or original leather scope cover for it?

I've got an ex-sniper and a wartime dated PU waiting for the same treatment. Yeah, I could just buy one that's been reproed to look like it; but it's just more right to restore the former sniper to her old glory.

Agreed! That's the only reason I've even considered doing this. If it were a standard rifle I would have never crossed my mind. So many projects and wants so little time and geld.

I get that, I have a bunch of guns that aren't worth what I have in them....
