The only problem with them now and maybe in the future, is there is almost no one making ammo for these except the Russians at this time, almost all the former eastern bloc countries that adopted them are now joining nato, thus switching over. The other nations that use aks, didnt follow, and the largest user of aks, china adopted a larger 5.8mm round. Even the Indians who use the rifle went to 5.56 nato.

If you want one, try to stock up on ammo, its only at gun shows, and mail order. Your local stores proably wont be carrying it, unless there is a huge following of the rifles in the area(or they sold tons of them too)

that was one of my biggest concerns was if the russians stop making it, I know wolf makes it now and I saw www.rguns.net has original russian military $125 for 1080rds. If I get it I am gonna grab a bunch of that

Greg, if you can get some of the tantal magazines, the steel polish ones, they are nice. I have about ten of the phenolic ones for my sar-2, but only three of the steel ones. Mags in the future might be tough, I think someone has them cheap still.

As mentioned on some other threads here, the 5.45 market is soon to be flooded with milsurp 5.45. The Poles and Bulgarians are joining NATO and a byproduct of that move is their total movement to 5.56 NATO weapons.

The Poles and Bulgarians are surplussing ALL of their stock of 5.45x39

The Russians are still using the 5.45 for their military and show no signs of moving away from it. The stuff at RGuns is 70s Russian surplus.

Yep, but 'corrosive' is no problem if you clean your guns after you shoot them.

It is also less of a problem with AKs, since most all AK74 variants I'm aware of have chromed bores, gas pistons and muzzle brakes with corrosive ammo usage in mind.

You might have to be more religious about your cleaning if you use corrosive milsurp in your hand built 30.06 or 8mm sporter (with a non chromed bore and a highly polished blued finish).

From Aim Surplus: 1080 rounds of corrosive Bulgarian 5.45 for $125. You can get it for as low as $118 per case, I believe. Wolf non-corrosive 5.45--$160 for a thousand (the Armory). I am very happy with the WASR-2 I recently purchased from Aim. The trigger and the stock were better than I expected. Rifle is handy to shoot, little recoil, holds poiont of impact, fun to shoot.

Built a Bulgy '74 from an ORF parts kit earlier this year- it ROCKS! If you like .223, you WILL like 5.45. The only thing I don't like is that I can't find 5.45 anywhere around where I live. Oh well! I got the ammo from AIM, as it was most resonably priced that I could find. Infact, I just got back from shooting my '74, and found it was worth every $$.
