ive got basicly a steel rod for a buffer right now that came w/ my PTR91, and in the prone position w/ the bipod out, my shoulder reminds me of this. Those of you who started out w/ somthing similar and upgraded did you really feel a difference and was it money well spent?

Your PTR91 should have a standard G3 buffer assembly in it which is a spring loaded assembly in the buttstock.
First, check your bolt gap.
You may also need to replace your recoil spring.

As Rusty said your PTR should have a standard HKG3 buffer in it. I have two PTRs and both of mine had the standard buffer. All of the HK buffers are metal and it takes a lot of force to compress but they actually are spring loaded. If you do not think the buffer is working properly you can take it out and put in in a vice and try to compress it. You also can take the buffer itself apart to make sure everything looks alright.
In one of my PTRs I am using a standard HKG3 buffer but I added a HK21 rubber butt pad to the A2 stock and it shoots very nice. A cheap and easy fix is the small slip on recoil pad sold by E&L. I have one of these that I now use on a US made MSG90 stock that I have and it is very comfy.
My other PTR has the MAGPUL PRS2 adjustable stock with a HK heavy two stage buffer. This buffer drastically reduces recoil and is best way to go but it does require modification of the stock.
Also I am not sure what stock you have on your PTR. I have had both of mine for a few years and the style of stock that came on mine had the butt pad glued on rather that retained with clips like the HK stocks. I have added other US parts and put HK furniture on my both of my PTRs. If you have the glued on buttcap and do not want to switch furniture and add US parts the easy solution is the E&L slip on butt pad.

I just remembered that my second PTR91 had a problem with the buffer. I think it was an issue where JLD coated the parts with something that actually sort of froze the buffers if I remember right. If this is the problem with yours you can probably break the parts free. I would remove the buffer soak it in kerosine and try compressing it in a vise.

my ptr[gift of sorts] had a broken stock [around the buffer hole webbing] and the buffer was bent like a banana by 1/16'' .taken the buffer apart found the bolivar spring [brass]broken in pieces and you push in very easy downward too.... need to find a 2 stage buffer system -please help me find one thxs, it now has the ''ptr comfort zone buffer'' installed ,has anybody used this buffer before with any troubles ?

Those 2 things are prolly the culprit. my BG went from .012 to .010, and I could feel a diff. I added +4 rollers, and it works great again.
Barring that, get another g-3 stockset from some dealer. I've tried a few diff ones, settled on a wood stock.
anything JLD did paint-wise would break loose on the first shot, and the buffer assy would be working.
Your other option is to shoot a Mosin, then shoot the PTR...the Mosin makes any other gunf feel like you're shooting an AR/AK! ;)

I actually have more than the required 7 US made parts for 922r compliance in case I want to put all HK furniture on.
US made parts:
1) IGF muzzle brake
2) JLD 18" barrel
3) JLD receiver
4) JLD trunion
5) JLD hammer
6) JLD sear
7) JLD trigger
8) Ergo PSG1 grip
9) MAG-PUL PRS2 stock
Other good us made parts include US made cocking handles from JLD or black market parts, US made flash hiders and JLD trigger housing.

"JLD". But only on the hammer, trigger, sear, buttstock and forearm. The Navy JLD trigger housing and firecontrol housing are not marked. But they are both machined and nobody has exactly that type except JLD. (The JLD Trigger housing has a "Mock" front pin. and the firecontrol housing is milled 2 piece black anodized aluminum with hex screws is lightly marked PTR on the top).. I've never found markings on the Navy housing it's self...

Yes, Try the M38 or M44... or any of the Brit's .303 with the nice soft brass buttplate. I have heard nice things about the "Comfort" Buffer tho. I also have been thinking about trying one. The all if the HK Heavy's start around $100+ and you need new metal and most often a new butstock.

Here are some pics in the G3 heavy 2 stage buffer.
Standard G3 stocks need to be opened up to accept it. This one is a factory stock.

MSG90 buffers, however are the same diameter as the std G3 buffer, just with a longer one stage piston
