Out of pure curiosity, is it safe to fire an AK with the reciever cover removed? Has anybody ever tried it? I've been looking at my yugo AK and I cant see any reason why not.

It's there to keep rocks and fingers (or maybe noses) out of the moving parts. Probably cuts down on crap flying out of the chamber, too..

You can fire it without the cover, the cover keeps stuff out, not in.
Most AK users call in a dust cover.

Wonderwolf, if some one jumps off a cliff, and doesnt die, is it safe.
I will strengthen this warrning, its not safe, It might not be a bad idea to keep it on, if you end up with a peirced primer blow out. Thus if shooting with the sites,(I imagine without the cover on you might not be though) you might get a nice blast thur the bolt past the fireing pin, there are no vents thus the gas would vent stright back. The cover give you something to deflct it if you think about it.
I beleive the pressures of the round are aproaching fify thousand psi,(50000 psi) with nothing in the primer to stop the gases, look at your bolt, there is nothing to keep the gas from following the pin back. Most bolt actions have vents, and various ways to vent this, this rifle doesnt. Only to trouble shoot would be a reason to do this, unless you think you can beat the odds and never see a pierced primer, and how many folks talk about seeing them on many military surplus rifles/ammo.

If you are not wearing shooting glasses when you do it, you are a fool. Diagnostic reasons would be the only good justification for it.

It looks like he only pulled the trigger once, but there is also some muscle movement on the back of the hand with each shot. Nice vid.

I've rode bareback on a Fal and on an AK. Works like a champ when you are testing something.

Ditto on being carefull. I shot around 100 rounds or so trying to see how I screwed up my build and was quite into the workings of it as the shells were bouncing off my forehead (3 or 4):icon_biggrin:

No. It is not SAFE. Yes. It will work without the dust cover. Shit flys out.

Like Okie said, a pierced primer is going to ruin your day shooting from your shoulder but I would like to see where all the brass or steel end's up going if you shoot it without the cover, if someone could video that, it would be cool to see it work in slow motion.

"is it safe to fire an AK with the reciever cover removed? Has anybody ever tried it?"
Yes, and Yes. I did it for diagnostic purposes. I wear polycarbonate lenses. even witht he dust cover on, I sometimes get tiny splats of primer or heated oil coming back on my cheek...I'm left handed, so I'm on the side where stuff is most likely to come out.

If I were in 'da shiat' with an AK without a topcover, I'd still shoot it tho.
Do it at oyur own risk. Good for diagnostics, but be safe.
