I had my MAS 49/56 out for a few pics so I thought I would post this while I was at it.
This rifle is a 1938 MAS with no import stamp, I know its ugly.. We all know it's ugly.
Even the French I had a French Air Force Officer stay at my house and He said ''It's sure one ugly rifle!''
(I showed him my M 1903 Mk 1 and compared the two for looks only)
But it could kill if the troop behind it felt like fighting and you have to say it's a very rugged rifle .
Anyway as for mine it could have been used in the Battle of France, Vietnam war part one 1948 /54 the Algerian war 1956/60.. I have no idea, but I know I have a piece of history that goes with the other rifles I own.

Norton, please sir. Could you post a pic of the other side. The front sling mount is what I want to see. Mine has the middle fore stock band on it loose and I am looking for the correct parts but not sure what they look like. I've seen some rings on some other french rifles but don't know if that is correct for this one.
Thanks

Got one of these a while ago, a century import converted to .308, they also added a safety, a trigger block like a sks. The thing is in great shape, I beleive a post wwII model, not used much due to the replacemet by the 49/56

They are ugly, but pretty good shooting rifles, and tough too! A lot tougher than the troops that were shooting them. :icon_biggrin:

Thanks, Norton. That is totally different from what I've seen so far. The band on mine now must be off a K11 or K31 with the ring that pivots on the band bolt. The band pinched closed tight still has a 3/8" gap or more. Hopefully numrich will have the right setup. Thanks again.

Great rifle, I love stocks with gripping grooves on them! Can you fire 7.5 mm Swiss in said rifle?

The MAS is 7.5X54
The Swiss is 7.5X55
What you can do and what you shouldn't do are iffy subjects.

Could you get away with it? Maybe, since the length is only 1m shorter but I wouldn't risk it.

Very impressive, guys. Those rifles are just soaked in history. Tough rifles, carried by some tought soldiers in a dozen different wars!

Indeed. I've often wondered just where mine has been. Certainly more well-travelled than most people, I'd think!

I saw a few of those at our last gunshow rechambered for .308, didn't look too bad,
asking price was around $270 if I remember correctly.
is that a reasonable price for one?

Nice looking MAS 36 rifles guys. I wish mine had more character to it. Mine hasn't seen much, if any use since being refurbed.
With it's 49/56 younger brother.

an answer to an eariler question... NO these cannot shoot 7.5 Swiss. The 7.5 swiss cartridge has a larger base than 7.5 French, and will not chamber in a French rifle.

However the 7.5 French cartridge is said to be a good round, and these rifles are supposed to be fairly accurate. Supposedly they are second in accuracy of surplus rifles only to the Swiss K31 from many accounts. I personally want a 49/56, but can't find one for a reasonable price around here.

Not in my opnion, I got mine a year ago, and I think half that, and it looked good for sure.

i was at one of my dealer friends today and i noticed he had 2 different kinds of garnade launchers , i think one was for the mas 36 and the other looks like it was for the 49/59 ( maybe), this one had a clamp to clamp it to the barrel. ( i did not have a camera with me so no pictures).

are these hard to find? are they of any value?

I actually like the look of the MAS 36's.But then again, I think the Nagant 1895 revolver is good lookin' too, so, yeah, I'm a little wierd.I've almost gottn a 36 a couple times now, but the auctions always ended while I was at work, and I got out bid.I plan to keep trying though, once I rebuild the gun fnd.It got spent on a flintlock after I lost the last auction.
