I'm working in Virginia till December, and I was REALLY hoping to go hunting this season. Does anyone know of any good places for hunting? Is there public land or is it better to find a lease? Any good leases around Richmond/Petersburg area anyways?

Henry to the North west of where you are there is the George Washington National Forest. It is huge and you can camp and Hunt deer.
You need to buy a Natinal Park stamp so 'Uncle Sugar' gets his cut. It is a great place to hunt and just be outside in an Eastern Hardwood forest. Lots of creeks , hollows, and other neat Topo features. Put the 2nd Lt map reading skill to use. To the east of you there are severalwildlife refuges on Virginia's eastern shore that allow public hunting. We have a Island that you can both camp and hunt deer on. But I believe that place is shotgun only and they set you up with your own stand. There is the big USMC base at Quantico and FT A.P. hill to the north of you. Both of those allow hunting on certain training areas with shotguns. At AP Hill they won't let you if we have a drought as they are afraid the pine will go up like a roman candle.. I think FT Lee also has a hunting area and even certain areas of VA beach and Ile of Wright open for deer hunting. If you PM me I can send you a copy of the Virginia 2011/12 game laws. It is a magazine sized book that lists all of the public hunting areas managed in Virginia.
