I just got a brand new cast iron pot from harbor freight to melt lead wheel weights in. Do I have to season the pot per the directions before use or is it good to go like it is?

Good to go like it is...The purpose of seasoning is to keep food and stuff from sticking to it when cooked. Being as you're not eating the lead, and you'll never cook food in this pot , it is pointless. My cast pot hasn't given me any problems since I started using it many moons ago, and I never seasoned it...

I picked up a discarded CO2 tank that I plan to cut apart and use for a big pot. A lot quicker to clean lead that the small furnace I have.

Bullseye I use a big black stew pot and propane heater to melt lead for ingots and it works great. Round aluminum muffin tins make very good ingot molds.

I use a round style muffin pan as well. The ingots are perfect size for when I'm ready to cast bullets from the cleaned lead.

no but what i would do is heat that pot up to temp empty first. Some cast iron pots have a tendency to crack when heated and i wouldnt want it to happen full of lead. Id run a couple cycles of hot and cool first.

Last time my wife went out of town, there was an M44 in the dishwasher. Talk about quick cosmoline removal.

So far no luck locating the turkey frier, might have to use the coleman stove. Any worries with a coleman stove?

HeHe, when the wife is gone all the clothes hit the wash at the same time. No sorting. :)

Hello, sorry if I sound nosy, but what are you melting lead for? Are ya making your own bullets? Where can I get a mould? Do you shoot these outa guns normally meant for copper jackets? I have done alot of x-ray installs for Dr.'s offices and have been hoarding lead just for this. I am intrigued........

A Coleman or camp cook stove works fine. I use one with a stainless pot.

John,

Any firearm can shoot cast lead bullets out of them. One varies the hardness by adding other components to the mix. Do a search on this. One thing to keep in mind when using cast bullets is to keep the velocities lower than one would for jacketed bullets to keep the barrel from leading.

You can purchase molds from such companies as MidwayUSA. You need to know your grove diameter to best choose a mold for your rifle. I have a 303 Brit that I might just have to try out some cast in one of these days.

I am by no means an expert on shooting cast as I have only done it out of my 357 mag Dan Wesson and not out of my rifles. However, I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express before.

John, from what I hear, X-ray lab lead is almost pure lead and for a bullet caster a great thing. You will have to add some tin and maybe antimony to adjust the hardness depending on what you are gonna shoot and the velocity. Starting with pure lead makes it easier to get the right composition. You wouldn't happen to be near middle tennessee with all that good lead would you??? :)

Hello, Thanks for all of the usefull help. Had I known this I would'nt have turned down a pickup truck full with 3/4 sheetrock stuck on it. I was rat holeing for some cap and ball peices for me and my range buddies that we don't want to clean.:) Naw, I'm not near there but I have extended Family in the Shelby triangle I have'nt seen in years. I do this work in waves so I will probally come across it again unless the commodity market makes the GC put a guard on it. If I come across a load I will post.
