Well folks after 7 long years here in communist occupied WI I am going to be transfering to Des Monies as soon as I reenlist. Looks like maybe September I will be there.

Anyone know much about Des Monies? Where would be a decent area on the south or southwest side to live so I can be close to work, but not too close to the airport or darn train tracks?

Also what are the gun laws for Iowa?

Thanks,

the only place I've been that's flatter and more tree-less than INDIANA! It's so flat there that it is nearly concave.

Had some cousins out there, and an uncle, but they moved here for the lush forests and hills (smell that? It is SARCASM)

Good game bird hunting, still have lotsa local hocky teams and rinks with the old chain link instead of that gay plexi!

Iowa's hill country compared to out west here, but heck atleast you are getting out of the cheese head, sausage eating place there(heck it I imagine it isnt that bad there, atleast cool summers, and some tree in wisc too).

I dunno...I always thought Florida was always about as flat as it gets. I remember as a kid going to some zoo and they talked about this mound of dirt being the highest point in the state. It was about as high as the hill in my backyard....

Gun laws.

There is a CC carry, but it is up to the local Sheriff / county if they will issue one or not. Polk Co may or may not like giving them out.

To purchase pistols, you need a permit. Go to Sheriff's dept, pay $5 and they do a back ground check on you and give you a permit (if you pass) it is valid in 3 days and is good for 1 year. There is no limit on how many pistols per year you purchase with the permit.

Good thing on having the pistol permit as it allows you to bypass the federal insta check by showing the dealer your permit when you go to purchase a long gun.

You can transport rifles / pistols in vehicle as long as the ammo is not loaded in the weapon. I have seen comments that Iowa considers it a loaded weapon if you have a loaded magazine NOT in the weapon. You are safe if you keep the stuff locked in the trunk while transporting it.

Gun show at the state fair grounds about once every 3 months. There is one June 29 - July 1. Next one after that is Sept 21 - 23. Cost $5 to get in. The Polk Co. Sheriffs dept runs security at the shows and they are always polite and friendly.

Thanks for the info, good to know. Probably gonna leave some of my toys here in WI with the brother in law, but I will take one of the big safes and the smaller one, plus a ton or so of ammo.

There are a few ranges around Des Moines. One is about 15 miles north, over by Ankeny and I can not remember the other one in that area.

I shoot at the local Issac Walton in Ames (north of Des Moines).

We don't get as much snow as I am sure you are use to, but we make up for it with wind and cold.

Anyone know much about Des Monies? Yeah! The south side is OK but West Des Moines is better!

Go to googleearth.com and search for the airport and tracks. then put in a search for places to live! If you want help for a house or appartment let me know! I have realtors for homes that are reputable. Appartments are better in West Des Moines.

Also what are the gun laws for Iowa? I had to drop my FA License when I left Texas! Don't do much of anything without a permit to carry and get one and all is explained in the course and questions answered. I teach the Tac Team here and work on equipment for Fort Dodge and the Guard on Army Post and know quite a few people with the Air Guard also. PM me and I will give you my number!

Several shooting ranges and hunting close by!

Lots of gunshows throughout the state!

It's OK but not Texas for shooting fun!

Man I have played in alot of crazy rinks, but checking someone into old chain link, that sounds fun!

Hate to leave, but the job says I got to move. It is heck sorting out stuff I spent all week after work and all day today tossing stuff out. Got lucky and gave away a couch, weight bench and weights and flimsy file cabinet. Set it out by the road and poof it was gone.

Got about 60% of my garage sorted out, now working on gun stuff. Gonna pack what I want to keep, and the rest will be on the for sale section.

We've got a good mix of folks here, not as many ranges as I'd like and depending on what county you're in the laws can be pretty good to reallly tight. In Johnson county GOOD luck getting a CCW and there are judges who won't allow officers to bring their firearms into their courts. It stinks having to get fingerprinted to buy a handgun too!

We found a house last month, supposed to close on the 7th, movers came yesterday and took 15,980 pounds of crap, which puts me over about 3k pounds. Not to mention the stuff I have to move. I will be back in WI on the 8th to grab my last load of stuff and say goodbye to everyone at the office. I will have the cable turned off today so no internet until the 10th when it gets installed in Des Moines.

Will be moving all day of the 9th, movers are supposed to drop off my stuff on the 10th. I start work on the 11th at my new job.

Y'all take care.

Ok so it's up to Geilt, Kmurphy, and me, now that DAA is shipping out. If only Wisconsin had a dash of Texas instead of Illinois in it we'd be ok.

Hell a dash of Minnesota would be tolerable. At least they have concealed carry now. Man, I wish I still lived there sometimes. Madison is about as liberal as San Francisco.

Frickin' hippies.
