I was eyeballing the ones that Classicarm.us has, the russian captures. they range from 220 to 280 bux.

Is there a bettr source for these?

What should I be looking for / out for in a k98...you know the good, the bad the ugly?

What do the bores typiclly look like on these? Do I need to think about thriat erosion or shot out bores?

All the guys endrsing the K98 over the mosin got me thinking that I bettr get me one.

How pricey is it to feed the K98, and what sorta 8mm round do it take?

I'l be doing some reading up on the weapon, but I thot I'd give the experts their say.

Thanks in advance,

--Steely.

I feed mine whatever I feel like on that particular day, and it just lies back and takes it. Surplus seems to run fine as long as your pin isn't worn down. Most of the RC's haven't been shot much, but may have some bore pitting if improperly stored, but many have loads of cosmo, so it should be fine. The one I ended up with was a nice runner and fairly accurate. Of course, I got it through a local shop... maybe hand pick will be your friend? There are a couple places running some surplus Czech ammo with the cupro-nickel coating like the Swiss 7.5 that I'm going to give a shot once it comes in at about $120/450, which isn't great, but decent compared to hunting loads.

Keep in mind that a good percentage of RC's out there are counterbored. My S code was CB'd and it shoots VG, but you may want to ask about it when ordering.

Aim's got 8mm Romy...ouch.

J&G's got Czech 8mm for $119 for 450 rds.

Neither are great deals compared to what the prices were just a few months ago, but I don't know of many sources for 8mm right now.

I see J&G also has some Nazi collector 8mm now...might have to get a couple boxes of that just to keep.

I boughtmy RC last summer from Big 5 for $199. It wasnt CBed, and had a nice laminate stock.

I think they are closer to the $300 range now, but the $200 ones still pop up from time to time at gun shows.

The deciding factor for me on a K98 is the bore. Ive seen a bunch with pitted bores lately. Mine had the incorrect stock on it, so you may want to find one with the correct stock and buttpad.

Aimsurplus has K98's for $210 and can handpick for $20. They are russian capture.

I wanna make a few points on Russian Capture K98's.

-Bores vary from guns that saw a lot of war to guns that didn't' see much. A later dated gun will generally get you a better bore. My 1936 and 1941 are pretty rough and another 1941 is very good but counter bored.

-All of them are mismatched and reblued. The only matching numbers are the receiver and barrel. The electropencil was done by the Russians. All the stocks have been shellaced by the Commies

-They are/were all coated in cosmoline. Some of that will hide pitting. My 1936 is pitted, but that could have happened in Stalingrad for all I know.

-For 8mm you need 7.92mm X 57. Or 8x57mm. You CANNOT shoot 8x56mm, which is what the "nazi collector" is normally. JGs looks like standard 7.92 x 57, but there is a lot of X56 out there. 8mm has gone up A LOT since it was 4.5 cent a round 8 months ago.

-If you don't mind peened waffenamts, I/O has them for $179. Intact markings start at $199.
