How do the modern bolt action .30-.06 bolt action rifles, like say the Savage 110, stack up against the old military ones like the 1903 Springfield? I know they don't have the same appeal to the eye, but what about accuracy, recoil, and general feel?

Factory stuff out of the box has come a long way. Most are excellent right out of the box. I can think of a Ruger, Savage and a Howa that I have been involved with that shoot 2" or better. A cheaper Savage was the most accurate. The old ones are old or rebarreled and the wood touches in a lot of places it shouldn't for accuracy purposes. Folks can still squeeze some decent/fantastic groups out of them with $$$$$.

A military surplus rifle and a NIB modern bolt gun are hard to compare. Modern guns have between 50 and 100 years of more modern technology on their side, not to mention they are new. I believe you will get a more ergonomic feel and better accuracy from new bolt gun. Recoil might be better with an older, heavier rifle. Kinda like comparing a new car and a used car, even if that used car is a 1963 Corvette.

I agree. I love 1903's, but its hard to beat Savage's right out of the box. Not that they are gonna be tack drivers, but they are inexpesive good rifles.
