In some places there are bans on open carry, thus I imagine loaded in the truck would constitute this.

Here is a open carry web site, discussing oregon laws. Not sure if they are right, but might give you a idea of what to look for.

Heres a link to oregon statutes,
http://www.leg.state.or.us/ors/166.html
166.170-166.638

I am no laywer, and didnt stay at a holliday inn express last night either, thus for me and the rest of the internet, take the advice with thought of remember what you pay for it. Its free and thats all its worth, unless you get a better interpertaion of the laws on the books, by reading the statues yourself. Thats my two cents on it.

If you cross state lines, that is a definite no.

I thought that 'long guns' were unrestricted in carry by federal law.

"Open Carry" concerns handguns, not long guns.

Here in Texas, I can have the rifle in the gun rack, but personally, I don't like advertising.

Nalioth, some places roll both laws together, kinda like back to the wild west days, of no firearms within city limits and such.(looks like there is something of a hodge podge in that state though) I agree though open carry is useally hand guns, and also agree about advertiseing firearms so openly, when not in a activity like checking the range, or hunting, might not be such a good idea.

Seems there is a neat codicile about meninceing firearms too.

I think he would be good to read the laws, and still contact local leos, about their views on it, trying not to step on toes, unless a poster child case is needed and there is backing on legal bills by some one with deep pockets.

Last I heared it wasn't legal to have a loaded gun in the vehicle while on the road unless you happen to be on your own land. Would be nice if I was wrong on this one. Maybe its just marion county where I am.

One time I was pulled over and the cop took my 44 magnum revolver and spent a good long time back in his cop car. Maybe he was checking on if I was wanted for something. Then he noticed that those were empty shells in the gun.
