I would like to put a M14 metal buttplate on my new Springfield M1A Standard. It has the rubber pad . I like the look of the metal buttplate and the fact I could then use the storage in the stock. What kind of screws does it take to put a metal buttplate on a Springfield synthetic stock ? What metal buttplate should I buy ?

Any military/G.I. butplate for an M-14 should work. My stock on my M1A was a surplus G.I. coated with some type of black textured paint. Check Riverbank Arms, Fulton Armory, etc. they should have what you are looking for. good luck.

I know the buttplates fit the older USGI springfield stocks but I have the newer synthetic stock. Thats what I want to fit the metal buttplate to. Seems to be some different ideas if they fit and what hardware is needed.

Not 100% sure, but I believe all you would need to do is to remove the rubber butt pad and there might be a piece of wooden dowel that also needs to be removed. Then you would need a upper buttplate screw and nut.

Just bought a metal buttplate. Went right on Springfield (not ex GI) synthetic stock M1A using screws from stock rubber butt pad.

Changed stock to USGI M14 . I didn't want to paint my SA stock but wanted to try a camo job. Liked the buttstock storage but like the SA rubber buttpad length. So now I have my cleaning kit underneath my SA rubber buttpad on a M14 stock painted camo. Kind of slow to get to cleaning kit but very secure ! Could change back in 5 minutes if I needed to. USGI stock needs a hole drilled for the SA rubber buttpad guide pin ( 0.25 inch ) . The M14 stock uses the machine screw ( SA stock uses coarse plastic threads for short screw ,machine threads for long screw) for both buttpad screws.
