Anyone have experience with the AR-7 and M-6 survival rifles? Which would you keep if you had to choose one over the other?
(*I know SHTF/Survival threads are a no-go for the most part here, but hopefully it doesn't steer over that way)

M-6 is a much better survival weapon. The AR-7 is not nearly as dependable in my experience.

The thing I like about the AR-7 is its semi-auto, mag feed, and the barrel is kept in a sealed tube in the buttstock. I've had a couple.
Not very accurate, and ugly. Good for what its made for though.
No experience with the other.

AR7 is very unreliable. M6 is single shot so what can go wrong..for the most part. I have the M6 in black .410/.22Hornet.

I had a new 1979 AR 7 . It was very hard to get sighted in and I did not like the rear sight.
I had feeding malfuntions with my rifle. The pros were it did seal up realy well in the butstock carrier.
I have not shot the M6, but have shot the Savage 4.10/22 O/U. 29731 in that respect you cannot go wrong with the M 6
By the way that made a short version of the savage called the campers companion in the 1970s. They also made it in 20 gauge/22. It had a butstock storage compartment for shotgun shells and 22. long rifle.
29733 The entire weapon was made to break down into a leather case for storage in a rucksack.
I think the USAAF issued them to Pacific based aircrews in WW 2

AS the others say, my old Charter Arms AR7 was always unreliable and about as accurate as throwing a rock. "Jam-O-Matic"

Thanks for the input guys. If I manage to find both for a decent price, might buy'em and do a comparison review for fun.

The joke about the AR-7 is that the nice thing about is that it floats,so that when you get fed up with it jamming and get ticked off and throw it in the river, you can fish it out later and sell it to some other sucker.

I'm guessing that's why the Israeli's ditched the water-tight compartment stock and opted to modify it with a collapsible wire stock.

The M6 commands double(see edit below) the price now. I can't believe they quit making them and more so I can't believe they didn't start up production again. I gave 169.95 for it probably 10 years ago. I've had a lot of offers for mine but fortunately I actually gave it to my eldest son as his second rifle a long time ago.
EDIT: I actually searched gunbroker. They want $750 for the .410/22hornet used. I would not pay that. The AR7 is .22 only so toss that choice out now. If a .22 only survival rifle is wanted a 10-22 can be tricked out in to that mode for half the cost of the M6. To have the shotgun/rifle mode I would get one of the cheap ones on the market and do some work to it to have ammo storage, etc..

There are also several aftermarket stocks, barrels, and accessories for it.I used to belong to the AR-7 forum. It had more people asking "Why doesn't my AR-7 work?" then ever asked about a CETME. The mags are poorly designed, the mag latch is poorly designed. The rear sight is poorly designed. The receivers crack.
If you want a survival .22 here is 100% better choice, the Marlin Papoose http://www.impactguns.com/marlin-papoose-22-lr-take-down-rifle-70pss-026495077204.aspx

Hard to argue with a 16" 10-22 and a folding stock...
Weren't those M6's were made as cheap disposable emergency weapons? Funny how "collectible" changes the equation so drastically. A wonder no one is making copies, especially given the AR-7's infamy.

I like that too!
As far as the M6 goes, it is very simple but rugged.

Im thinking AK with folding stock.
I dont see my folding 1022 ever killing anything big enough to eat
or able to fend off a zombie attack.

I know that this is a different caliber than you were asking about but I like the Marlin Camp 45 in 45acp. The Camp rifle is awesome I have both the original wood stock and a synthetic side folder which I love. It has a 16" barrel with a side folding Choate and uses 1911 mags.
You need to up grade them with a new buffer from buffer tech and a stronger recoil spring from wolf but they are great guns. If you have a 1911 to go with it this is a great combo.
Here is my survival/home defense combo:

I thought the idea behind the M 6 and AR 7 was a firearm for pilots to hunt small game. Not fight it out with the Nazi, Japanese or Reds
He had his 38. S&W Victory fight with.
This is a 1 pound pack rifle and fishing pole combo

Now you can't fight the Viet Cong or the Germans with it, but you could shoot a bunny or catch a perch.

I keep a lot of different firearms in my vehicles around the house, around the shop, around my toolbox in knap sacks, backpacks and alicepacks chambered in 7.62X25. Back ten-fifteen years ago you could really stock up on arms and ammo for this cartridge. Heck if you can get to a sack with a tok and pps43c you should be good to go. Oh yeah, keep some ammonia and a box of rags in your sack to for cleaning.
