View Full Version : Tried my new .300 Blackout (BLK) AR build today

I had pretty much completed a AR build when I picked up another 5.56, so decided to do something different. I had been pretty impressed with the writeups on the Remington backed (actually
Freedom Group) .300 Blackout (BLK) and decided to go with it. I made sure there was several sources of ammo and as it used the same bolt, magazine, etc, as the 5.56 it was a easy switch.
The .300 BLK cartridge looks like a 5.56 with the neck cut off. It uses a .30 cal (3.08) standard bullet, so there are endless varities already on the market for loading. The cartridge has slightly
more zip than the 7.62x39. I had just a short break in the weather, so just did a 20 round shoot at an existing target I had out 80 yrds from my barn. I used a little Sig Red Dot for a sight and
CMMG 147 grain FMJ cartridges for a quick test. I quickly realized I should have not used the Red Dot for a 80 yard shoot as I had trouble with blurring from my less than perfect vision. I did a
standing mag dump resting the AR handguard on a piece of equipment. The recoil was noticeably harder than the 5.56, but not bad. More like what I would expect from the 7.62x39 cartridge.
I had no function problems at all (albeit it wasn't much of a test). I placed 17 of the 20 in a 3.5 inch circle. Range experts can tell me what that means. To me it was good for a 80 yrd standing
shoot with blurry vision. I am hyped up to put a another scope on the rifle, set up some good targets and shoot off a couple of hundred rounds.

It looks just like a regular AR. You can see the picture and also buy a .300 Blackout (BLK) upper 1x8 twist at "Model 1 Sales" for $370.00. If you already have an AR you don't need anything else to start.
Just take your 5.56 upper off, take the charging handle and bolt from it, put it into he BLK upper, put it on and start firing. Magazines are the same and a 30 round 5.56 mag will hold 30 rounds of BLK ammo.
The upper can be shipped straight to your house, no FFL needed. A complete basic BLK kit runs for $545.00, but would have to go thru your FFL dealer. I bought the upper from them, but had already
build the rest of the rifle from parts I got elsewhere. If I build another one I'll buy the entire kit fom them. Hope that helps. I know some good ammo sources. It is available.
I'm going to put one of these together after the new year. I have a friend who is going to turn a barrel blank and fit to the upper, etc. for me for $95. He really likes the .300 AAC round, even more than his AR-10 Platform.

I have a DPMS LAR-308. It is OK, but seems heavy compared to a standard AR, nothing much (if anything) interchanges with the rest of my ARs and the recoil starts getting uncomfortable by the time I get a 20 round mag thru it. I definately will be using the BLK much more than the LAR-308.

Alrighty Chief, got a few questions. I've got a spare lower and this is one of the rounds I'm looking at jumping into. How was the recoil? Is the standard buffer good enough? Did you have any problems with overgassing?

I have heard all good things about this round. For my next AR it will either be this or .458 SOCOM. Watch out for model 1 sales. They are notorious for credit card fraud and ID theft.

Tell more. I have been looking there.

Recoil about like a 7.62x39 cartridge, more than a 5.56, but not bad at all. Remember I just did a quick shoot, but had no problems. They claim all the standard stuff works fine with this round, it's only a barrel change.

I have not heard anything bad about Model 1. One of my dealer friends said he did business with them and did not warn me away from them. They were good/friendly on the phone answering questions. I got the upper
in good time and good shape. I did not have any billing problems. Saying this does not mean you are not right. I only know, what I know, which isn't always much, LOL.

The 300 blk runs at lower chamber pressures but running a h buffer prob wouldn'T hurt. Model one reminds me of blackthore.

No FFL needed on a kit. Model 1 does not sell receivers. They had some problems with security on their website, which led to some card and ID theft. I have bought several kits from them by phone and never had a problem.

Your right, their "complete" kits do not include the receiver, no FFL would be needed. I took the wording "complete" at face value. It is still a good deal at $545.00. I can get a receiver, AIM Surplus has some good
deals on them. Again, I had no problems with Model 1 on my order.

sorry to bring new life to an old post.
but you all said you can just pin on the new upper assembly and use your exsiting bolt set up. is there any head spacing concerns when this is done?
head spacing in general on a ar platform, besides being next to impossible to adjust. seems to be widley debated issue. opinons vary from don't bother to its critical. any opinons from model one or any from anyone on this board?

I have never heard of any problems. The .300 BLK casing is basically a 5.56 casing with the neck cutoff. Mine has been functioning just great with all the standard AR componets, including every type mag
I have. I am not a technical person, but am quick to pickup when something doesn't seem right. Probably didn't come close to answering your question (lol). Hopefully someone else will jump in and give
you a better answer.

Why not, then get a bolt/bolt carrier group for your 300 upper and forget about it..........
