Effective 1-3-12 Springfield Armory (SA) and Harrington Richardson Arms (HRA) Service Grade M-1 Garands are again for sale at CMP.
The price has gone up from $595.00 to $625.00 on both types. Shipping has gone up $2.00 to $24.95. I have had real good
luck buying this grade from CMP and the price is still great. I did a earlier post in this section on M-1 Garands and CMP that might
help those interested. http://www.thecmp.org/Sales/rifles.htm

Great update! I really want a Garand. No collection is complete without one. And this is probably the best deal out there... just bad timing on the finances :-(

This is pretty average condition on the Service Grades I have gotten from CMP. Once in while they will put on new stock, I prefer USGI stocks. A complete discription of their grading is on their website.
Remember, it is luck of the draw on these.

Thats the bad thing about the Service Grades, you have a better chance of getting a ugly orange commercial stock than you do USGI.
In past rifle sales very few shipping with USGIwood ,nice rifles if you dont mind the stocks

I think that may have been true in the past, but much of what they are selling lately is late manufactored Garands. Most of them are coming with USGI wood in good condition and original barrels. I bought
10+ last year and only 2 had commercial replacement stocks. The 2 replacement stocks I got were nice. Even if a guy shelled out an extra $150.00 for a new walnut stock, it would still be a savings over what they are
retailing for around here. You are also getting a rifle that has beem inspected for safety, gauged, and graded. Oh, most of the barrels I got gauged within new barrel production standards and are near pristine.
I also bought two WW2 Winchesters that had 1955 SA replacement barrels. I don't believe they were ever re-issued after being serviced, just put into storage. I had some extra money from sale of farm equip and
went all out last year on these. Trying to make 3 sets of them for 3 sons to inherit down the line.

You got very lucky with your orders. If you follow the CMP forum you will see that the biggest percentage of SG rifles shipped in the last year or so come with commercial stocks
They are a good deal just not a fan of the orange colored birch commercial wood
Who knows its possible that the SG they have graded now will come with USGI wood

Not sure about now, but it used to be that you could request USGI wood and if they had it they would try and get you it if available.

Yes you can make requests but they do not dig through stacks of rifles to do it.
They will look at the rifles on teh top of the stack and if its there they will ship it.
From the CMP forum "requests" for USGI wood hasnt helped much as it wasnt there to send.

I must have deleted my reply, so will start again. I thought my 10 were a good sampling of what you can get. Your right, no telling what they will release this year. I went over the
two replacement stocks with dark Old English and they looked pretty decent after that. All in all I believe these are an excellant way to get a decent Garand at a good price. I bought
all mine to keep, but did trade an H&R for a Breda Garand out of a dealers collection. The H&R had the replacement stock. Several thought it was a new rifle, lol. The dealer decided not
to keep it and sold it for $1,095.00 no-sh-t!). I will enjoy mine now and they will be there for the boys in the future. Remember my experience may not be yours!

Not trying to start a argument, just to give new buyers info.

Here is a quote from Orest Michaels the director of operations at CMP when asked about the percentage of USGI wood vs commercial on Service Grades
"don't track numbers on how many have GI wood verses how many don't, but my guess would be 20% for GI and 80% for new "

Question, I was down in camp perry a couple months ago for the first time ans splurged on an M1, 1903, and a krag. Now I thought you could only get one rifle of each type?? Is there a waiting period between purchases of M1 Garands? or can I just call them up and order another? I love the one I got and would rather buy 3 garands instead of 1 M14 Clone.

I know you aren't and I think we actually agree. I am just stating what happened on my purchases and added it is the luck of the draw. A new stock is
still a good deal on a good Garand. Hey, I just got a email from CMP saying they only have 2000 Service Grades they are releasing, which doesn't
sound like many. My order is going in this a.m. It will be a while before I see the rifles, but I'll let you know what I get.

No waiting period I know of. I made back to back orders, You have to order by mail, unless you go to the stores. They need the background check and other forms with original signitures. You can get
the forms (4 of them) on line from CMP. I am going to the post office right now with an order. Mail orders go through CMP Anniston, AL. Rifles will be Fedex to your home.

12 garands per year per person. There are 2000 Service Grades available, that does not mean after they are gone they are sold out, just all that are graded as of today.
Many more crates of rifles that havent even been opened, inspected or graded
I may make a run to the North Store tomorrow just to take a look.
