Sometime back, I converted a couple of Mosin Nagants to hunting rifles. One was a carbine (pictured with other Nagants) and the other a long gun.
The long gun Model 1891/30, was my first try and the results were so so. I also cut the barrel down to a managable length. The carbine turned
out much better. I have taken the carbine, (which is very accurate), out to the Rockies on Elk hunts. Packing back in on mules/horses it was a
backup gun for me (or anyone who needed one). I should have taken a deer with it this year, but was hurt most of the season. I am curious if
others on the forum have used the Mosin Nagants for hunting and what they think of it? I got an email from Country Shed today on new items,
one is a muzzle brake for the Nagant http://www.thecountryshed.com/mosin_nagant_stocks_and_accessories.htm go down the page and you
will see it. I also like the buttpad Centerfire System has for them http://centerfiresystems.com/mosinnagantriflebuttpadpartpad-nagant.aspx
they also carry replacement stocks and conversion parts. Last, but not least, a little Mosin Nagant humor http://7.62x54r.net/MosinID/MosinHumor.htm
this has been around a while, but is still funny! An estimated 37,000,000 Mosin Nagants were manufactored.

That break is a piece of junk, don't waste your $10, thread your barrel and get one fromm an AK if you want that.

Thanks, I only mentioned it as it showed up in my email just a few minutes before I did this post. I'll keep mine just like they are.

I've taken my M38 and M44 hunting, both "as issued". I used 200grn soft points. A couple of boxes of those at the range in a T-shirt left a nice steel buttplate shaped bruise on my shoulder.:lol2:

That's why I got those buttpads from Centerfire - couldn't afford to get my shoulder put back in place everytime I used them, lol. I saved the steel ones for the next guy who has them ---, builds character!

That muzzle break would help with that it's just the way it attaches is crap, I think K98 has a MN scout rifle with a break like that on it.

I have used my M44 for hog hunting using various heavy ball and soft points and it does the job real good.
I used the bedding technique from "BOT" and did a trigger smoothing from "AGI" and voila'....nice shooting M44.
put's meat on the table and is real fun to shoot....although it is time to re-bed the thing.

You get extra points if you bayonet one! :)

I've always been a fan of the Mosin as they're made, plus being dirt cheap you can modify or convert it however you want not having a whole lot of money sunk into a project.
