Can't wait to see it. I don't own an FAL but they are neat rifles for sure.

i finished it. the action is the smoothest of all of the fal built so far. fit together without any grinding or adjustments. this is the first of the imbel rifles to build. ( 7 compliance parts)

:thumbup:That's a beautiful job. I hear that those things go together with more precison and less mystery than CETME's and the like. While I have restored a some pretty rough bolt actions, M-1 Carbines, Garands, and nursed a CIA CETME back to health I have not done any builds. Maybe I should start with an Imbel FAL as I have a friend who does them who can guide me. An FAL would fill a hole in my collection as I don't have one. Can you fire commercial ammo in an FAL?

Any way, that is a great job.

I think fal`s are some of the nicest battlerifles around. They are simple, strong, and accurate enough for me. I am waiting on my DSA reciever, I have been told it will be in the first week of July. Started out as Imbel build but I wanted a Imbel reciever and could not find one under $500 bucks! So I went with DSA, and as I looked through some parts boxes I started finding alot of new parts, added a new barrel, and I am looking at DSA`s new lowers now. If I get it I will be building a quite expensive but almost 100% new parts fal. I am excited about it. Anyway back to the reason I posted VERY nice rifle Capt. Ron, and I would really like to see your SA builds, I hope you do them next.

"That's hot" ...........to quote Paris Hilton.:airtight:
Beautiful work Planning. I want an FAL type rifle next and you guys have me wanting to build it myself rather than buy it. I may have to met up in FLA for a group build with those guys.

rhodesia r-1 fn fal, pictures. (good color match by the girl at lowe's.) i used one of my wifes make up brushes, ( hope i can get it cleaned good before she gets home from work).
i looked at several hundred of the rhodesia pictures and most did not have paint on the barrel, so i did not put it on the barrel or the rubber butt pad. many of the rhodesia rifles had the carry handle cut off, some did not. my kit had the carry handle intact so i left it that way. this kit also had the x-long stock on it it is about 3"- 4"'s longer than regular stock.. ( 7 compliance parts)

Paint job looks real good, Planning. I may go visit the 'ooops bin' at my local home store.

If you are looking for the para carriers I would recommend the DSA made carriers. I purchased one from another vendor (sent it back) and was not as impressed with the machining / finish as compared to the DSA (sand cut). Same is true for the para cover. However, I think the little alignment tab on the back of the cover could have been a little more pronounced on both examples i saw.

Are you going to go with the nose or no, nose top cover? You do know about needing to make the cut in the upper for the top cover nose, correct? I would suggest the nose style cover as it helps hold the spring / carrier together when you insert it into the upper.

If you are going with a para lower, see if you can try some different makes. I have a SA lower and my only complaint with the SA lowers is that when the stock is folded the stock digs into the top of my hand when holding the weapon. I need to figure out if I can get the folded stock to ride about 1/2 inch higher when folded.

This is copied over from the FAL Files.

----------------
It's a 19/32 counterbore with a 9/32 pilot. I just did mine on my drill press following DeanD's advice in this thread . I did it in steps, checking the top cover fit until it would close with the cover flush at the recoil plate. It looks perfect.

I got the piloted aircraft counterbore from MSC.

Here's the part numbers and links...

08840381 19/32 HS SS 1/8 HOLE 884 1/4 SH.AIRCR CBRE. $24.99
08902181 9/32 BODY 1/8 SHANK PILOT $4.1700

It's about $38 dollars with shipping. You'll probably need the 12" long 1/4" drill extension, too. It's another $2-3 at your local hardware store. Here's a link that shows the extension."
---------------

You don't need to hire someone to mill out the spot in the receiver. I did mine and you can do it yourself as well. I just checked and P/N is 08840381 19/32 is $30.56 from MSC Direct. P/N 08902181 pilot is $5.13 = total of $35.69 plus shipping. And you need to purchase a 1/4 inch drill extension (or 2) to get past the rear of the receiver.

I have the cutter and pilot (somewhere hiding in my shop) and I bought it because if I wanted to do another one, it would be cheaper, but I also did it because I already had my barrel mounted to the receiver. With drill, it will take you about an hour start to finish and that includes stopping to check the depth of the cut and the fit of the top cover. There is a little burr on the left hand side of where you need to make the cut, that you must knock down with a Dremel tool so the cutter will not catch on it.

By the time you pay for shipping 2 ways, you can have the parts. The pilot will ride in the same hole as your gas piston rod that comes through the receiver. You need to remove the rear gas tube support that screws into the front of the receiver then use lots of cutting oil and you are golden.

Link to the FAL Files for the para-cut (http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45216&pagenumber=2). You will have to log in to see the posting.

Your cut will look like this afterwards

PM me if you have any specific questions. It really is quite easy.
