Okay so my dad is hitting retirement age soon and I'd really like to get him a Garand as a gift (maybe even for Father's Day if I can get enough money in place by then) since he used one when he was younger overseas.
What should I look for in used Garands? I'm not well-versed with them and know very little.

I don't think you can go wrong buying them through CMP. This is a post I did a while back on them http://www.militaryfirearm.com/Forum/showthread.php?22417-This-might-help-if-you-are-wanting-an-M1-Garand .
I have bought 12 M1 Garands from them over the last couple of years and currently have 4 more being FedEx to me as I write this. I learned CMP was the best place to buy by trial and error when I started my
Garand collection. It is a wonderful gift for your father and you should have one yourself. If there is any specifics I can help you on drop me a PM. I'll get way to windy for a post not knowing for sure what
to focus on.
Updated: another post I did on the M1 Garands:
