A couple of months ago an individual offered to sell me a MAS 49. At the time I was purchasing other rifles and maxed out, so I didn't pursue the offer. I didn't ask to see the rifle, nor was a price mentioned.
I recently bought a MAS 36 and that got me thinking about the offer again. I am sure he still has it. It would be something new for my collection, but I really don't know anything about it. This individual
usually has real quality stuff, so I'm sure he will price it accordingly. Saying that, I don't know what accordingly would be, never buying one before? Anything you all could tell me about this rifle or
value would be appreciated. Thanks!!

The 49/56s are currently selling in the $350 to $500 range depending on the condition and accessories with the rifle(Bayonet/cleaning kit/mags, etc. If it is a 308 conversion from Century check it out for function(some were good and some bad). I have both the .308 and the 7.5 and they function great. Prices have gone up steadily on these in the last year. There is 7.5 French Surplus at Century and SOG(it is corrosive). I really enjoy shooting mine and now own three of them.

Buckshot I have the 7.62 MAS 49/56 CAI conversion and it works fine. Some do not work fine.
There is a great write up from JFPFO
http://jpfo.org/filegen-a-m/masrifle.htm
These guys had a gunsmith in PA to get FAL twenty round mags to work and fixed the CAI gas system spring problem.
Mine as I said was turned over by CAI and seems to work great after 200 or so rounds of NATO.
I almost had a FAL mag working in mine, but it would only last three shots.
The MAS 49/56 riveted mag latch can be removed and spot welded on to a FAL mag. But the key is you need a proper jig.
I gave up and have been searching for a French army 18 round magazine (Yes 18 rounds not 20 leave it to the French to be different)
The combat record of the 49/56 is spotless, in it's 7.5 set up. She is a good as FN 49 and full power German or Russian semi-auto rifles from that era

Thanks, it gives me a starting point on the price. I made a large order from SOG a couple of days ago and tried to order some 7.5 for my MAS36 and they were out. They had a real good price on it too,
Oh well. I just checked Century - min. order appears to be 1000 rds at $475.00 (corrosive). Really appreciate the info!

Thanks Norton that was a great article and good info! I am hoping it is the 7.5 version, but I'll bet it is a .308. I am pretty determined now to get one even if I can't work a deal with him or he has sold it. I am in the
market for one.

Century seems to run the 7.5 on special quite often. I bought 1K rounds in December for $375 plus some other ammo to get the shipping covered.

I thought maybe I had looked wrong at the price, but checked again and it is $475. I'll be patient and keep checking for specials.
is this a 49? I'm looking for a '49 I see the title, is 49/56 but then I see '49 in the subject.

MJ, there are two 49's on Gunbroker right now. Pricey one with matching scope(Syrian Contract) and one other.

He said 49, but I did not see it. I am pretty sure it is a 49/56, so I put that in the title. Right now I would take either to start, but I think the 49 is fairly rare?? I justed called him and he thinks he probably has
sold it or has it stored it a couple of counties distance from here. Like I said I am in the market for one and won't stop looking.
update: jmikey's post was not up when I wrote this, let me know what you think/find out please!

My Century MAS 49/56 is chambered in 7.62 Nato; and luckily mine is a shooter. I have not had any baubles with it; it is a great little carbine; typically French; built to last. Mine works great with surplus Lake City 7.62 machine gun ammo; properly tuned and chambered in 7.5 French it would be a formidible weapon.
