My search is over.

I found this rifle this morning on another board. I've IM'ed the seller, so I am assuming that she is mine!!

$270 shipped. No word on matching or bore condition. Best deal I've seen in awhile, so I figured I would jump....We'll see!

Longhorn, I think you have a addiction. Nice addition to the collection though.

You are going to love that rifle.

The balance and accuracy of mine makes it a joy to shoot.

Plus, if you are used to shooting hose Mosin monsters, this one will be a pussycat by comparison

I've kicked the FR series around a few times, but wnt the Mosin route due to availablity an cost of ammo.

Hey, I'm cheep. Mebbe sometime I'll get to shoot one and see how cool they are.

Put a chamber adaptor (http://www.mcace.com/adapters.htm) in the FR8 and you can shoot 7.62x39, .30 Carbine or quite a few other .30 caliber cartridges out of it (that are cheaper than .308). I plan on doing this with my FR7 and 1916 Guardia Civil rifles.

Well with the rifle collection, I think I know what you would be up to when you say to quote Tony Montana, "Say hello to my little friend"

I love my FR-8, it's got a very handy feel. In fact I'm going to go hunting with it next season just to make things more interesting.

Deer?

How far of a shot would you try with the open sights?

Well its using a Mauser-style bolt and a Cetme barrel. If I had to guess I'd say it would no less accurate than the Cetme. Probably a bit more accurate. A lot of it would have to do with the ammo you're using and the condition/cut of the chamber.

200 yards with iron sights but to hit the assured kill zone on a deer sized target at that range might be tricky.

Actually these rifles don't use a CETME barrel. The profile is different and the chamber is not fluted.

I have found my FR8 to be much more accurate than my CETME or G3 rifles.

I can reliably hit 4" clay pigeons at 100 yards with open sights.

The area where I hunt deer is pretty thick (behind my house) so a scope really isn't a huge advantage in the thick brush/woods.

I like the feel and balance of the gun and from what I hear they are pretty darn accurate. Main thing to me is going to be to just get out and shoot as often as I can with my FR-8. I need to practice, practice, practice  .

Then I stand corrected. I could have sworn I remembered reading somewhere about not having enough Cetme's available so they pieced the FR7/FR8 together using a Mauser action to a Cetme barrel.

Could also be the information I was reading was wrong.

Regardless, I want one!!

I really liked mine but only shot it with reduced loads. It made a fun plinker. I decided to sell it though and now DAA is it's caretaker.

I wouldn't worry about shooting NATO 7.62 through an FR-8. I wouldn't shoot commerical .308 though due to the higher pressures.

Surplus rifle has a good article on the FR-8 mentioning this:

I wasn't worried about shooting any ammo in it. It was built on a large ring mauser action. I shot reduced loads because my shoulder did not like the recoil from full power loads. Plus the light sub sonic loads wer quiet and good for pests around the house.

Geilt,

You are partly right, the Spanish military did not have enough CETME rifles to go around, so they re-barreled the mausers to the new 7.62 NATO round and put on the same front sight as the CETME. Added to that was a new rear sight to match the CETME sight picture and the training rifles were complete.

I think that one of the reasons that these rifles are so much more accurate than the CETMEs is that I gaurantee that they had MUCH fewer rounds through them than any of the CETMEs. Not only because it takes linger to cycle the bolt, but because they kick like a mule. (a small mule, but a mule nonetheless)

Thanks for setting things straight Rusty. Makes more sense now.

If you are interested in stripper clips, the Yugo 8mm ones work great. This info was on the old Cetme forums before the crash. I bought some of the clips that had once been on some of the Yugo 8mm ammo that came pre-loaded on clips.

If you put a 7.62 x 39 adapter in a Mauser of Srpringfield how do you extract the round? Will the standard extractor in the bolt do the job or do you have to dig or push them out? I have never used a chamber adpater but I have always wanted to try one.
