View Full Version : Recoil: Cetme vs G3

Here is a question I have always wondered about. Which recoils less? The Cetme or the G3? I read somewhere that the Cetme unlocks at a higher pressure than the G3 and therefore has lighter recoil. Now let's assume new weapons with both being in spec to end those arguments. Is this right and what is the proof.

I'll say the G3 has more recoil because of the above and the wooden stock on the CETME

Even with a plastic stock, my CETME seems to recoil less than my PTR-91, and the PTR-91 even has a heavy barrel.

such as the differing buffer designs (outer and inner parts differ), different recoil spring characteristics.
Leading with "Perhaps" is my way of shrugging textually. I've never fired both a brand new AND in-spec CETME and HK for comparison.
I do know that those who have fired Perro's MARS said there was definnitely a diff...but this is not 1st hand info. sorr.y

if it helps any, ive fired my CETME with both CETME wooden and G3 plastic stocks. i think the recoil might have been a little more with the G3 stock, but i honestly dont know for certain
my CETME barely kicks at all compared to my deer rifles

(yeah, I fire the Mosin for a while when I want the CETME to feel like I'm shooting an AK)

I too have heard the difference in timing makes the CETME recoil a little lighter than the G3. However, that could be just another ether legend. I think we need to hear from someone who has fired several examples of both to get a qualified opinion.

The G3 and 91 series of rifles has different LP's that can be installed to tune the timing, and thereby the recoil...
If the Cetme unlocked at HIGHER pressures, the bolt would be flying back faster. That would make the recoil higher it seems. But thats just speculation. My cetme kicked slightly less when I put G3 furniture on it FWIW. Its all so little when everything isin spec, that I think its tough to tell the difference. I know I shot 150 rounds in a matter of about an hour, and didnt feel a single bit of pain in my shoulder.
It only took 5 rounds of Hornady lever-evolution in the 45-70 to get the tingle goin.

150 rounds in an hour.....
Heck, I have gone through over 240 rounds in 45 minutes with my CETME.
Just this week I took some friends shooting, and we went through 80 rounds of 7.62X39, 90 rounds of 7.62X51, 100 rounds of 9mm, and 100 rounds of .45 all in about 30 minutes. Total of 370 rounds.
The guns used were SW5, CETME, Romanian underfolder AK47, and my Taurus 24/7 pistol.

well if we're counting total rounds... in that hour it was
150- 308 through my cetme
150- 308 through a M1a
350-400- .223 Through 3 AR's
40- 45-70 through a Marlin 18"
600-650- 22lr through a 3 10-22's, G22, single six, 2 P22's
50- 243 wssm
60- 5.45x39 through a Arsenal Ak-74
for a grand total of about 1450 rounds....... does that get me on your scale? It may have been an hour and a half, but not more than that. At one time we had 5 guys firing at the same time to see who could bust the clays at 400 yards the fastest...............

Cetme's nor G3's have enough recoil to matter! :g3: Look this little smile is shooting one! Do you see any recoil?

Doesn't matter that your broke. There isn't hardly any milsurp ammo out there to be purchased anyway.

All the more reason to NOT have a massive shootout on surplus ammo! Is it possible to have plinker's remorse?
cuz Im really regretting shooting all that ammo, no matter how much fun it was. Its not a good feeling to have a badass rifle, and no ammo to shoot through it!

I know that feeling having bought a gun and no ammo of that caliber in the house.

I had the opposite problem.
I have 9mm CORTO (380) and no gun.
Nagant ammo for a short time with no Nagant.

I haven't shot my G3 and CETME back to back, but the recoil is similar. The CETME has a MARS style pad on the wood stock, the G3 has a plastic coated collapsible stock, so that will add some variance as well.
The last shoot I ran 4 mags thru the G3 back to back about as fast as I could and didn't notice any issues with the recoil. Bump fired a couple as well (doesn't bump as easy as my AR)
I can say from experience bolt gap has a big effect on recoil as well.
