Found a great find at my gun shop yesterday after finding out that my Makarov had a bent sear
a Consigned SVT-40 in VG shape with about 75% finish and all matching parts with nice mottled wood but no sling and a cleaning rod
I thought it was going to be spendy but the price tag was $299 (or 319 with tax)
So I picked it up-- sorry for no pics but I had stripped it down already for cleaning before I thought of it. I'll get some on Monday when I get it put back together.

Did I do OK-- I had heard of the price range being 300-650 depending on condition, and the bore looks nice.
What do I need to know before firing it? Where is the setting on the gas regulator I have been hearing about?
I am pretty psyched as this is the last of the Commie long arms needs to round out my collection.

I'd have taken it for that price. Looking forward to the pictures. That's the last rifle I need in my Commie collection as well.

It is a 1940 Tula as well...bolt, stock and receiver matches in serial number

Thata a hell of a good price, about a 1/3 of what I paid.
I mentioned it on another thread XO, but go check out www.surplusrifle.com section on the SVT40. That will show you want you need to know about the gas adjustment system.
Jim Balogh of Black River Gunsmithing (440) 458-5396 makes the tool to adjust it. Call him m-f 10-5 eastern time.

That's what I thought too so I grabbed it. It looks like the previous owner got carried away with some corrosive cleaning fluid that faded some of the bluing on the receiver and gas tube but Oxpho Blue creme will touch that up easily. That is the only badness I can see so far and the wood is mottled and nearly perfect for a Tula 1940
Lots of copper in the bore...I've used up about 1/4 bottle of Sweets so far and the barrel looks better each time
the innards are soaking in Ed's Red right now
I'll get pics on Monday

It was the only one...that's why I had to grab it, I knew it would be gone
the copper is now out of the bore and while it still dirtying patches the rifling is crisp and sharp
nothing seems wrong with the gas system either
Which way do you turn the gas adjustment to increase the gas?
I've got to get out and shoot this thing:fn-fal::rockon:
I have the gas adjustment tool on the way...now to find a sling

Most people start with 1.3 I've read. Here is what I pulled off another website.
They were marked 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5, and 1.7. A special wrench was used that corresponded to the pentagon shape of the regulator. This tool was used to remove the muzzle brake and gas piston.

if you need to take it out of the stock you can use an AK sight adjustment tool. Works just like it was made for the job

My gas setting is on 1.7 (that is the setting top most). The current setting I believe is on top
I should start out on 1.3?

1.1 is the lowest setting for light ball ammo, and it appears most be recommend 1.3 to beging with.

Got it out to the NRA range yesterday
shot slightly high at 50 yards but the Hungarian Silvertip I was using was sparking on the backdrop so I stopped after 24 rounds, then I shot my Mak
The rifle cycled fine at 1.7 gas setting and had a few short strokes on 1.3 and 1.5
