When I painted my CETME I wanted to get as close to the original color that I could, but with Duracoat. So original was parkerized. I got Duracoats parker color. It good durable paint, but the color is more like a semi-gloss version of civil war uniform southen grey. I'm gona do it again, but mix the parker and some flat black. That I think will get it alot closer.

I used Alumahyde II on my G3 and 2 years later it looks just as good. I used the matte black.

Another vote for the AlumaHyde. Tough stuff, easy to use.

I used it to refinish my Norinco UZI. It took a really long time to dry, even with some heat.
One area, though it seemed completely dry (several days) crinkled with a second coat. Don't rush it, let it dry for at least a week before you attempt a second coat.

AlumaHyde II, matte black is an excellent match. I like duracoat too, its easier to apply and you can use it an hour after you bake it, where Alumahyde takes weeks to dry. If you try to shoot your rifle (cough, cough pay attention) without waiting 2 weeks for alumhyde to dry, the paint will bubble and flake off. That was at the 10 day mark.

If you don't have an airbrush setup, then Alumahyde would be the cheaper way to go.

Both provide a tough finish.

i used the duracoat on my g3,,, i used HK black and it was a really good match,, the barrel and cocking tube had a really good finish on it so i didn't paint them ,,, looks like i did,,,they say(duracoat) that it will dry to the touch in 2 hrs and 24 for use but it takes 3-4 weeks for full cure so solvents don't hurt it

i put it on and left it for 3 weeks before i put the gun together

i'm very happy with the results

they have a kit that comes with an air brush,,,,easy finish i think,,,you get enough for 2 long guns or 4 pistols,,, around 50 bucks

my experience was good and i would use duracoat again

I refinished a CETME with Alumahyde II Semi-Gloss Black.

I chose it because it looked to be the darkest black on the Brownells website.

There is nothing "semi-gloss" about this one. It looks like you painted the rifle with black fingernail polish and dipped it in water. WAY too much shine.

The Matte Black is the way to go.

As far as the finish itself, it is durable as long as you apply it in a real hot environment and you prep the metal correctly. Degrease properly and apply in mid August....allow full cure.....and you should be fine...

I've used both Duracoat and Durabake in HK Black and love both of them. For items small enough to fit in my oven, I use durabake. Airbrush kit from the local HarborFreight was about $6.99 on sale. If you don't have one for your compressor, get an air dryer. They're not too expensive.

Very true! I had to hit mine with some polishing compound to reduce the gloss. Stay away from the semi.

I need to back up and say, I use KG Gun coat...not duracoat. My bad.
