I am not familiar with a 98/22, but it sounds like a bolt takedown disc to me.

yup... it's for taking the pressure off the firing pin when you're taking apart the bolt.

Thanks guys that is what my buddy thought. So second question. This stock has no finger grooves like most mil surps do. However it don't look like it was refinished. It actually still has cosmoline oozing from it. Is this comon or was it refinished and the grooves sanded out?

The 98/22's don't have grooves, and if you compare it to the VZ-24 and the Persian's (made in Brno) you'll notice the stock is narrower as well... that's the way it's supposed to be.

I Have Been Told That They Ran A Cable Thru A Bunch That Were Lined Up For Sercurity So They Could'nt Walk Away. Try Useing That To Take Apart The Bolt Alot Easyer Doing It Another Way.

This is good news. This stock is in pretty darn nice shape and even has some spots of tiger stripeing. The bore also looks nice. I will be trying it out tomorrow at the range.

some of that Czech wood does look nice... my VZ-24 has some beautiful stripes, too bad it patterns instead of groups...

I had a VZ-24 that shot terriable myself. I am hoping this rifle does better. I shot surplus ammo in the VZ but plan to shoot reloads in this one. I loaded up almost two boxes of ammo with surplus bullets I had pulled from duds but after these it will be new bullets only. My VZ-24 beat me to death. I will make sure this one don't even if I have to use reduced loads. It don't take much just to knock gongs around.

My dad's got one, it was his first mauser, and says it's the most accurate one he's got... wish I had picked one when they had them at Dunham's a few years ago.

I looked at one at Dunhams but at the time I was more into the Swiss rifles. plus I am glad I waited. This one is much nicer and I traded a K31 for it.
