The only 308 rifle I currently have is an M1A and I am thinking about either a G3 type rifle or an FAL. I like the PTR 91 A3R rifle or maybe the DSA SA58 Voyager?

Any recommendations on which one you would pick ( I am on a budget ).

Well for resale value i would say Fal rifle in metric configuration. Kits are getting harder to find (Kit=350-400/Receiver=300-400/922R compliant=300). G3 build (Good kit 200-300/Receiver 200-250/Convert to semi auto=Your labor of love/922R compliant=300-400). But a Century Arms 308 Cetme run about 695.00 and are already 922R compliant, but you still have to add the Labor of Love to get ir to perform. Good luck. Roger.

One of my best setups money wise is a Saiga 20" with a Leupold scope, my LR308 (Burris prism) was fairly reasonable money wise and no problems with it. FALs good rifles, like them.
Cetme and so on.

Dpms lr308 is a decent rifle very accurate for the price

Everyone should have a FAL but the saiga Buck mentioned is a good bet.

Yes, forgot about the Saiga. Very nice firearm. I still need to add one to my safe. Gotta get this darn HK thingy done first. Roger.

I have AK & AR rifles and I am wanting the FAL ( or G3 ) type action. You see Atlantic advertising the DSA on-line for around $1K ( which is about what i want to spend for a new or used ).
When I look in the local shops the DSA's are about $1800??

Also I don't see a PTR rifle mentioned here? Is there issue's with them? I have heard about the Century guns....pot luck if it works well or not.

PTR's are top of the line HK style rifles, but you said you were on a budget. Every PTR 308 rifle i seen is way over cost compared to other clones in my opinion. Roger.

Roger

Atlantic Firearms has the DSA FAL SA58 Voyager & PTR A3R for about $1K which is in my budget. I like both but wanted your recommendations on both and why a local gun store would be $800 higher?

Roger

...and why a local gun store would be $800 higher?

Because they need to make a profit. It costs a lot of money to run a store.

I've shot both but only ever owned a FAL. If I had it to do over again I'd still get a FAL.

Hmmm. What other clones are you talking about? PTR GI 839.00. http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/component/virtuemart/shipping-rifles/ptr-gi-308-rifle-w-o-rail-detail.html?Itemid=0

I've never shot a FAL, I would like to have one some day though.

I have fired FALs. But , dont like them as well as HK91/PTR91 rifles. Mags are cheaper too!!

Can't go wrong with either an FAL, G3 or a AR-10.

I own an FAL and a few G3 style rifles. I think the G3 wins slightly for me, but I'm a huge H&K fan. For shooting pleasure between the 2, I'd lean slightly to the FAL, just because it's a little "softer" feeling. The AR platform will give you the most customizability if you like to tinker.

FWIW I have a Century Arms CETME for sale here:

I like the 7.62x51 - .308 Winchester; at one time I had 55,000 rounds of linked 7.62. Here's a list of the guns I have chambered for it:

Spanish FR-8
FAL
DPMS AP-4
Sig Sauer 716
Steyr Scout Rifle
BM-59
Savage Striker (pistol)

Here's a photo of the Striker:

You have a M1a, why do you need anything else? The FAL is HEAVY, at least mine was(STG-58 clone), a good HK type will be softer shooting I think. But if I was going to buy a NEW .308 rifle it would be the Ruger http://www.ruger.com/products/sr762/specSheets/5601.html

How could I forget I have a Springfield M1A and a Chinese Polytech M14S, both in .308!

I like to collect & shoot military rifles ( or semi-auto clones ). Obviously the FAL is a classic rifle that has been used by many armies all over the world, and since I have the milsurp disease...I MUST HAVE ONE!

PS Great Handle. One of the best museums I ever visited was the firearms section at the BUffalo Bill Center in Cody.

I have an IA code HK-91 and a Century CETME. They both run well. Mags are a big issue. HK mags can be had for under $5 each. Most of the others are far pricier.

I have a dozen FAL's and 3 G3 clones currently. The FAL is by far the winner on felt recoil. Accuracy about the same when condition is comparable.

If I wanted an entry level FAL I would look for a good Imbel kit, matching or not on a Coonan upper. The market is soft right now and that set up should run around $900.

G3 clones are 2 PTR 91's and a Cetme from CAI when they were building on cast receivers in their St Albans plant. Fun to shoot but can be a little finicky on bolt gap.

FWIW. CDNN has 16" PTR 91 with surplus wood furniture right now for $799. Best price I've seen on a new PTR in a while.

So the kit includes everything but the Upper? Does the Upper consist of the Receiver & Barrel ( attached )? I do not have the tools or expertise to install a barrel or headspace. The more I read about it I think I would be better off buying a complete rifle.

thanks for all the comments

You should be able to find a rifle for that price. Right now some are taking rifles down to parts and selling parts for more than a complete rifle. Crazy I know but that's the market right now. If you're going to buy a FAL I would suggest looking at the marketplace in the FALFiles forum. They come and go pretty quickly so watch close if you're interested. There's a nice G1 clone out there now for $1300. Fair price for the rifle and it was built buy Adam Berg, regarded as one of the best FAL builders out there.

Building is pretty straight forward but will cost you $300+ in tools to get started.

I've got a Springfield SAR 8 that fell into my lap decades ago. Very accurate, mags are the least expensive of all .308 semis. Ishy 2A1 and FR8 are good milsurp bolt guns. PAX

This one has the STG-58 handguard like mine did, adds weight, but very sturdy, I think it is a L1A1 barrel because of the lug, not a STG barrel.

There was another on GB that sold yesterday for $825. PAC marked Imbel GL upper.

If you're interested in buying now is a good time as market is soft.

Good luck.
