So the CMP is going to be offering their new "Special" grade Garands later this month. From the CMP website:

CMP's new grade of M1 Garand. Limited run of 1,000 Garands available for sale beginning 17 Sept, 2007. This rifle consists of a new production stock and handguard set with CMP cartouche, a new production barrel and new leather sling. Receiver and most other parts are refinished USGI, but some parts may be new manufacture. 2007 Introductory Price is $895.00 plus S&H.

Does anyone know anything about these rifles not listed on the site? Any opinions? I know that I would like to see a picture of one posted on their site sometime soon.

Sir...your "quote" from the CMP site is all I know also, I am curious to see pics though.

Pics 13-16 are purported to be one of the "Specials". Basically a new rifle as I understand it.

If this is indeed one of the specials, it appears that the clip latch, windage knob, elevation knob, rear sight, rear sight base, rear sight cover, gas cylinder, gas cylinder lock, and front sight are not "refinished" as the receiver apparently is, for whatever it's worth...

Not really by cup-o-tea to slap on new wood. Not my cup-o-tea to metal refinish a Garand either....but it doesn't look to be at a bad price for what it is...

Certainly...if you're wanting a "new" rifle, and your decision is between one of the specials...and a current production 308 Springfield wannabe Garand....I'd go with the special all day...
