Anyone know how good or bad these receivers are?

Which receivers? AK? They have a rep of being soft, poorly heat treated at least that's the word on the street. I've seen a couple of Hesse AKs and they are pretty crappy as far as quality goes.

I didn't know that Hesse was selling CETME receivers, but I'm a newb to CETMEs myself. I am looking for a stamped CAI receiver since I don't have a way of welding stainless without sending it out.

Hesse stamped receivers, from what I read and hear, ARE Century stamped receivers with different names on them... something liek Century bought their stamping dies from Hesse.
Even if they are different, they are equally a out of spec as the Century stamped ones. My guess would be that they even have softer metal than Century if their AK's are any indication of material quality.

I never can remember, but I believe Hesse made the cast receivers.

I thought the stamped were the Hesse and the cast was the special weapons, both bought by century

I have never been impressed with anything that Hess / Vulcan arms has ever produced. I once saw an AK made by them. Welded in trunion and crappy welds at that.

I have heard nothing but bad things about Hesse. Especially, their HK type firearms.

From what has been bantered, they really cannot be any worse than century receivers(not sure if thats a good thing or bad thing). The builder has lots of input on how good the firearm is when done.

I've never heard anything good about Hesse. That's why I have never dealt with them.

I actually looked for a hesse when I was buying my receiver and I couldn't find one anywhere. Ky imports had them on their site but when I called they were long since out of them. I wanted a cheap receiver to build the rifle for as little as possible.

The Century receivers ARE better than the Hesse receivers because of the stamping metal used from some reviews Ive read. Hesse went really cheap with the steel, and used some crappy really soft shit that would crumple and stretch and do all sorts of bad stuff. Century bought their dies and uses a little better steel for their receivers... just what I read and hear, and dont really have any backing for this info.......

Yes, that's what I read also. Nobody but Century and JLD/PTR91 Make US receivers now. Century Owns the SW3 (HK91 Clone receiver form special weapons, Century owns the Federal Aluminum receiver, and the stamped Hesse... They bought out FAC supply and a couple of other smaller parts manufactures. They are the big fish in the pond....

Id like the Century stamped receiver if they would modify it to make it practical to mount a scope and take a bit more care with the placement of the mag-catch.
If I had a machine shop, Id make a saddle that could be fastened to the stamped receiver so that scope mounting would be easily feasible.

Looking for a hesse to build on to save money would not be the best thing to do. The rcvr is not a place to save money, pay a little more and worry a lot less. Hesse anything is not a "quality" part, most of the people I have heard from that have a hesse rcvr either in an AK or H&K are not happy. The metal is not to spec and the rcvr dimensions are off here and there too. Best bet is to keep looking till you find a cast century and build on that. Or if you are really talented you could start with some seamless pipe and a welder......
