Heard mixed reviews about both Model 1 and M&A, but the majority were good.
Not exactly something that will hold any kind of resale value at all, but a good cheap plinker by most accounts.
also, Just wondering but why would you want a short barrel and a long compensator? You lose all the decent terminal ballistics, and gain nothing in overall length. Might as well get a standard 16" carbine and retain some of the ballistics that are rapidly deteriorating as the barrel of a 223 gets shorter and shorter. I see the appeal of having a short barrel if the thing is an ABR, but the short barrel with the same OAL of a normal carbine doesn't make sense to me. again, not flaming or bashing, just wondering what the attraction is.

Hi Jfowl31,
The reason is I like how it looks with the short barrel and long flash hider. I dont know how to go about getting a short barrel rifle stamp and if it has to go through the sheriff like a full auto it wont be done here in Cincinnati because the Hamilton county sheriff is totaly against them. My county and city rules say nothing allowed over 10 rounds so my HK 91, Cetme,P226Sig and such are not legal here. The State passed a rule overriding that but I think they would still try to jam you up in legal fees trying to fight it. I bought my house before finding out about all that crap. Stupid laws for a stupid state. I would love to have a 10 1/2 inch with flash hider for my house gun. If you know anything about the SBR deal then please let me know because I want to buy a 10 pack of lowers [ AR 15 ] and build a bunch of different styles,
Thanks

Old Jimmy you could get a 16" barrel and put one of the fake
XM177 flash hiders that slide over the barrel and thread on the end. This way you have the full 16" barrel and it looks like one
of the XM177 style carbines, Bushmaster part no. MMT-0019.

Thank you Rep30cal, It looks like this would be the way to go. I didnt know anyone made those and it sure would look the same.
Many thanks

I see. I figured it must just be the aesthetics of it.
I think they are semi-cool looking don't get me wrong, and the idea about the fake XM flashhider seems like a really good compromise.
Good luck with it...
ALSO, just my opinion, but if I were getting something that my life depended on or might one day depend on, I don't think I'd get a Model-1 upper. I see the discount stuff as more plinking shooting type stuff, and not stuff to rely on to save your life. JMO.
Good luck with whatever you decide. and please post pictures when you get it.

What type upper would you recomend?

Del-ton comes highly recommended for not a whole lot more $$
I had William Snelling at the Tannery Shop build my Varmint upper, and it is top quality. He also does carbines and others.
Stag makes a great upper for a good price, as well as RRA and others.
Whatever you get, if its going to be for a defense rifle, I'd suggest chrome plated bolt/carrier, chamber and bore just to make sure everything is 100% reliable.

The chrome parts are what I wanted, just didnt want to get into th national match stuff because I figured it might be too tight a jam when I really needed it.
just a fyi but the model 1 sales xm upper(complete) i had never gave me any problems not 1 in 3000rnds.

I can vouch for Del-Ton.
I got the chrome bore, but not the chrome bolt/carrier. A very wise man that runs this forum told me "If Uncle Sam figures it doesn't need it, why do you?"

Thanks for all ya'lls input, I guess its pretty much like the Ford And Chevy thing. You always like what worked best for you. [ I build Chevys but drive Fords ]

I figured it was the kind of extra reassurance the Gubment is too cheap to pay for because "it works" as is. Perhaps it would work better and need less cleaning if it were chromed?
My carrier is not chromed either, but is also not a SD/HD weapon. If I were using an AR for HD, I would get every upgrade I could get to make sure the weapon was reliable. This is the reason why I polished the feed ramp on my Glock, and all the contact points, and have a SBS 12-guage... 2 things that will never fail me when I need them. I'll pass on using a semi-auto rifle as a SD weapon, but I have a couple that I probably WOULD grab if SHTF and I was outta shotgun shells, but the shotty would be an obvious first choice.

chrome bolt carriers distract the zombies so that they can't flank you. duh.
course...you could just buy a cetme and take their heads off with the ejecting brass...

I don't care for model 1. The few I have seen, built, and shot were very low quality. Worst I have seen.

Jfowl31,
It wont really be my go to gun. I keep my 239 sig next to me and it will get me to the safe to get my HK and Cetme while the wife and boy load mags.
I was just looking to build something that dont look like a M4 since everybody has one of those and I dont like to follow the crowd.
I built a Stag lower over the weekend that I want to make into a SP1 since thats what I shot in the military.

As far as i know you can order an A1 or C7 type upper from Mod.1 sales with the 11.5in bbl and a perm 5.5in flash hider, and for an extra 30 or 40 bucks you can get the chrome plated chamber and bore. I've had several of there uppers and other than brakeing them in,I've never had any problems with them. I don't run any chromed BCG but i do replace the gas key with stainless steel and side stake them.

Thanks MP44, what does side staking mean or do?

Staking the keys simply keeps them from coming loose, which can lead to failures.
Old Jimmy

I have seen them done on top but I thought maybe he was saying side staking was better.

Proper staking of the carrier key requires that you come in from an angle. From above and the side.

You can also stake them from the side and it pushes the metal into the screws and keeps them set. That's what Stag does nowadays.
