I couldnt find a post listed on this (although I have just worked a 12 hour shift and Im dog-tired) but has anyone threaded thier own barrels? I have a Bushmaster XM-15 heavy-barrel I was wanting to thread. Is there anyone with do's and dont's on this?

If pedro ever showed up again, he did my hi-point carbine for me... use a lathe though, but it turned out pretty good.

One of the guys I work with told me I could just buy a tap/die set and do it that way. But after seeing how this guy repairs his car I have to wonder if he even knows anything about life?

Well, unless something is weird about your barrel, you can't just buy a tap and die set. you'll have to get a lathe and turn down the barrel first.
There's a bunch of companies that will thread it for you. J&G charges $70 including return shipping, and I'm sure there are more out there.

this may help explain your answer... if you feel comfortable reading this and think you can do it on your own (I know I couldn't) then I'm sure someone here will have some more info on it... if this looks Greek and out of your league, then I'd leave it to professionals.

Now if your barrel is already turned down to 1/2" on the end... you can use just a threading kit... http://preciseinnovationsllc.com/old%20pages/threadingkits.htm
but at that cost once you get all the handles, and pieces to hold it center... I think I'd just have it professionally done.

Ironic that you posted that, I was just on that site looking something else up. Good site but definitely geared for the trained machinist.

I have cut, crowned and threaded many barrels using the Precise Innovations Die's and TAT's; FALs both L & R, HK and AR.

The g3 is a 15x1 right? Guess they dont have that thread. Because my PTR is a press on flash hider, would just silver soldering a muzzle break be enough to hold it? I like the less recoil and it makes it louder:icon_biggrin:.

sure do...
but were very hard to find for the longest time.
when I ran the barrel threading kit rental for the CETME(also 15mmX1)
I bought my dies from Victor Machinery Exchange - out of Brooklyn, NY
> http://www.victornet.com/cgi-bin/victor/index.html
Look under threading tools > then metric dies >
then find 15mmX1HS round 1-1/2 OD.
They used to be 15-16 $.
Call 1st... sometimes not in stock.
maybe you have a press-on... on your PTR
because you have the heavy barrel???

Are you sure the PTR is pressed on? G3 and 91 barrels have little grooves going around the barrel at the back of the threading to work as a locking "rachet" action with a G3 flashhider... That can make it look like its pressed on.
Not saying you're wrong, but I'd check further... Ive never heard of PTR's being pressed on.

IGF sells a US made "press on" flash hider for the PTRs....

Ransome, I would need the 15x1 for $16, and the holder they sell for 7 bucks and a thread alignment tool? Hmm, if I buy it I would only use it once, lol.
Thx hunter, I saw that, but wasn't sure how it works. What kind of press is needed for it and it wont bent the barrel in a little bit?
