You know this whole ammo shortage thing has got me thinking. When I first started picking up guns, seriously, 18-19 years ago, I thought all kinds of things would happen. I thought things as we knew them were about to change. So I tryed to be systematic about which guns I would get. Guns that took .22, 7.62x39, and most important .223, and .308. I thought that if I had thoughs, no matter who was on top, no matter where I was I could get ammo with no problem.
Most of what I thought would happen socially then and materially now is just the opposit. I am consantly amazed at the way things turn out.

Which of these calibers can't you get? For everyone of the ones you listed, I see cases and cases of at every gunstore I go to each week.
Granted they aren't giving it away cheap, but who is?

8mm, 7.62 X54R and 308 seem to be the hardest to get...5 years ago is was a dime a dozen cases so it seemed. Hard for me as I'm 21 and started to be a high volume shooter but then I can't even lay my hands on any well priced 54R any more. 8mm comes and goes but its getting fewer and far between and 308 has simply shot through the roof. Things keep going the way they are I can retire by selling what I'm sitting on right now.
I reload everything in pistol so I'm not feeling it as much there. Cast bullets are far superior anyways esp those out of the 429421 mold
I sold my Cetme last Spring and traded some of the ammo for a ton of 30/06 of which I shoot alot of. Seems like 30/06 is still around. CMP is your best bet still. I wish I was born 70 years ago....:icon_neutral:

Ahh....good old 30/06, I think that is just about the best all round....um..round. I think all the ammo is still around, but it's just more expensive. Try looking for quality 303 surplus.

Really? Izzit getting that hard to find? I paid about 12 cents per rount about three months ago, got over 1300 rnds of it. Must've been a choice of at least three types then also.
Do you go to gunshows, or just try to find it online?
AIM is listing 440 rnds of russian light ball for 70 bux...wow that might be a bit high...I liked it better at 50 bux, but I'll buy it until the stuff goes up to 30 cent a round...and buy as much as I can.
I've seen the ammo collecting ways of Capt. Ron, and thus I try not to lament price hikes until they his my pain point of 30-35 cents a round.
Man... a quick check of some other sites shows darn little milsurp to be had in 762x54R...
I'll need to stock up at some gunshows...

Yeah, well look what happens to price, and availability when there is just a little extened skirmish in a forein country. What do you think might happen if there was a complete colapse of sociaty as we know it.
I'm not saying that is going to happen. Years ago I did think that was going to happen. I was wrong. And right now, while we are not in the best shape, what would happen to ammo if it really got bad?

Yeah I got to alot of shows...And early on sat to but little is to be had in 7.62X 54R...thats ok as I just have 1 rifle for it but the MN to me is a WONDERFUL rifle and it fits like it was made for me so I wish I could shot it more often. Maybe there will be some deals at the creek here in a few weeks.

+1 on the .303 comment- all I seem to find is POF for reasonable $$$.
