:bull:
I just had some "help" pressing my barrel. Thanks, it's ruined now. It's gauled to hell and back and isn't even tight enough to try to set bolt gap, it just punches the barrel out. My fault, can't blame overzealous help. Now what? Get another new barrel? I sure as hell ain't sleeving or otherwise. Just about tired. I bought it to shoot not work on. :moon: Kiss this CAI!!:upyours3:
Ok I vented now, seriously, looks like all the material came from the barrel. Trunnion is still smooth. Could it have cracked? The trunion that is.:icon_sad: :wall:
Big Steve, I should have made the trip to NC.
Hope this rant hasn't been too offensive but the smilies were provided!

so how did it get all busted up? during the barrel pressing process? like maybe it was pressed in at crooked or something?

An educatied would be that since I had low bolt gap and the barrel looked about flush with the trunnion on the old barrel, it beat the area up so that when I pressed it, it gauled the barrel. Looks like just the barrel is fubar. Son of 2 B's. I'll let it lie a few days. I do laser alignments for a living so patience is a virtue. Two days sometimes. This is trying me though. If I hadn't bought the SIG 226, I'd part this byatch out and get me a DSA. Well, there's always next year.
I'll back up, punt, and try another set of downs as soon as I can see straight.

If you have pictures of the barrel and trunion from both sides I bet I can figure out what happened! If there was no B Gap and the bolt head peaned the barrel it could likely cause that! Another issue would be heat and age working itself overtime and giving you the middle finger! Maybe it was pressed and there were metal shavings inside the trunion groove and when pressed out it gauled the chamber area of the barrel! Pictures would be great though! Does it really just pop through now? That's just not right given the rolling and friction smearing of metal that guals! Like you said though, relax a few days and take a fresh look and think of alternative actions like knurling or just about anything but just parting it out! Are the numbers the same for most of the parts? Was it the original barrel or a new one?

This was a NOS Spanish barrel. Never mounted,etc..
I now mic 21.96 on parts of the barrel and 22.0 on some. It is fairly tight until you get it near the proper bolt gap then it's loose.

It looks like the receiver took some edge bending on the press too. If it is the barrel, Numrich sells a made in Korea G3 that is blue steel but looks nice for 58... But then you are getting kinda close to a Centerfire Kit for 99 with a new SB barrel and the extra parts. Heck. You could buy the kit, sell the trigger pack for about 90.00 on GB or AA and make back most of the cost.

Is there any sign of any metal that was protruding into the center radius of the trunion? Look on the barrel and try to find ghost marks that may match anything that is a likely marker in the trunion! It's hard to understand why it is loose when close to correct bolt gap. One thing I do see is that there was no collar used to keep the receiver from hitting the press plate and it was meld over and could have made the receiver cock and the barrel to be pressed out on line. I try to make collars to press directly on the trunion and not let the receiver touch the press plate to avoid damage to it. It's kind of like measure twice and cut once in carpentry. It also protects the trunion/receiver mounting welds from stress and keeps everything in line. Try not to give up and resolve your questions as to why this happened and finish the repair since that is where the true mark of sucess in dealing with any problem is! Like TRIUMPH the cigar smoking hand puppet says "YOU CAN DO IT" or was that "Shake it BABY!" I have faith that if you study your metal markings and systematicly work your way through this you will succeed!

Most of the flat you see on the recevier was already there. I bought a partial kit with a cocking tube and that half of the receiver to get the barrel. I noticed it's all flush. Mine wasn't. The trunnion was a bit deeper in the receiver.
I'll pose this question again. Can the barrel be knurled and still be OK? I can have that done in short time.
I remember one of the CETME sites where the owner sent one out and the shop trained a new worker on his CETME. They must have messed up and knurled the barrel trying to fix things.

Thanks Big Steve for the confirmation. I got a little overzealous and fudged it up. No biggy!!! Lesson learned. I made the mistake and knew better.
Century still sucks but I'll have most of their signature gone when I'm done.
Thought of knurling this one and continuing on. Yes you could do it but I'm really hoping for some accuracy and don't want to chance it. I've got another barrel coming.
Does anyone have accuracy info on the G3 barrel at Centerfire vs the accuracy of a regular NOS Spanish barrel?
Does anyone have the Rockwell Hardness specs on the barrel and trunnion? The trunnion wasn't harmed at all but it peeled the barrel like an apple.
Thanks for the input guys, this isn't the typical FTE,FTF, mag issue, etc. that seems to dominate the help wanted posts.

A new barrel would be the way to go since knurled metal will not give the surface friction even though it is pinned that a new barrel would.

I'll win a gunbroker auction or buy the Korean G3 at Numrich. If I weren't a cheapass I'd get one of those 250.00 jobs from????? I'll wait until I get mad enough to scratch build one.:party0045:

I lightly sand the starting crown at the chamber area that starts making contact with the bolt side of the trunion and clean up the trunion throat. Clean everything very well and always use a light lube on the barrel and trunion and things work better also! Good luck!:woohoo-1:
