Va is pretty friendly for gun owners very similar to NC. Northern Va is where you run into problems because you can take a wrong turn and end up in Maryland or DC then you're screwed.

We are one of the best in the nation. We have less of the BS laws than most icluding the deep South. No waiting periods, high cap mags Ok.. A semi autos is just a semi auto.. i.e a Remington 742 is the same as an AR in the eyes of the law. We have open carry that is you can carry a pistol openly in holster with no special permit. Just use common sence about where you carry it.
If you wear one in a mall or 'Starbucks' you will be arested for something as you will disturb the Yuppies. But on the other hand if you go into the 7/11 dressed for the outdoors or range for some coffee wearing a revolver, you won't be bothered.
As for CC we are a must issue commonweath. Thet have to give it to you and can't ask why you want it (if you are clean).
You can still buy ammo at country stores and guns at Wall Mart. I was stoped by the State police in one of those '' Auctung! Show me your papers'' road blocks. I had a large amount of milsup rifles on the front seat of my truck including the FN 49.. The police hardly mentioned it except to ask are all those rifles unloaded? And even that was said in a bored fashion. But they did take time time to ask me Are those old timey guns are safe to shoot ?
We are a great place to live if you hunt, fish or shoot.

Yes he is right if you cross that river with a pistol you will end up like Ned Beatty and company in Deliverance. DC has no mercy.. what so ever for outsiders with any firearm. Maryland is very hard on pistols and the laws vary from county to county. Some counties are like the Third Reich when it comes to guns.. That is only in locked box to and from the range.. or to and from hunting. Be very carefull in both.

Come on down. We have open carry without a permit. I open carry in NoVA regularly and have never been hassled.
As far as stupid laws, the main one would be that even if you have a CHP, you can't CC anywhere that sells alcohol for on-premise consumption - but it's OK to OC there!
Lots of good Virginia information on the subforum at opencarry.org
