I've never seen what I thought was bedding, but I have found what I THOUGHT was caked up tung oil or BLO under the receiver heel...

I dunno??

Maybe yours was used as a military base competition shooter at some point?!?

Check out the publications availible on www.Scotduff.com (http://www.Scotduff.com). He is the authority on M1's. If it is a true Match grade rifle, the serial number range will be in the book. Things to look for, Op rod being marked NM, Barrel marked NM, the sping guide may also be marked. But even if the rifle is not in the book as a "National Match" rifle, it just means it was not selected as as an official Team rifle for the Army National Match Team. Most Divison and the Navy, Marine Corps and the Air Force had there own armorers that made their units match rifles. They'd have the best availible parts and timing on the action. You may have a gem.

I have a National Match M1A1. The action will be very difficult to remove the receiver from the stock. Looks like clear fiberglass. Word of caution. Beded stocks are not meant to be removed vary often. The more you do it the looser the bedding. (That's why some shooters prefer pillered bedding). two Metal post anchored through the stock to keep the metal of the barrel from touching any portion of the stock.

It will be clearly marker NM down near the handle..

I sold one to somone here a few years ago and the NM was on top if memory serves..You would not have to remove the op-rod from the rifle to see it.. However, I've slept a few times since then.....

no other markings , this was a greek return ,do you think cmp replaced the stock and sight?? the stock has the p with a circle on the grip which usually means ww2 stock.

Could be a lot of things. At one time, bedding the M1s was popular with shooters in Service Rifle Competition. There was/is an Army Pam. running around the internet, now in PDF format, that explains everything that is/was done to the M1's for competition.

If it's marked on the op rod, you can see the markings in the gap between the top forearm and the lower stock. I can't put any confidence in any stock cartouche. They sell them all over the internet. It's the part numbers on the metal and the serial n umbers that matter. You can get the P circle P Diamond P and even the inspector makings on the net. I wouldn’t really worry about it. The CMP armorers’ got though those rifles and take unserviceable parts off and have a stock of serviceable parts that they put on. The P cartouche is a stamp that was used on the assembly line as acceptance by US Military arms procurement as “Passed”.

The presence of bedding does not always indicate a NM gun. I have seen several CMP returns with bedding in the stocks.

A bedded stock is only of special note if you know it was bedded for your rifle and was treated properly. Otherwise it is just an arsenal repair.
