we came across this handguard on a mission last night/this morning (which is a cool story all by itself...phirebug earned his ATAS tab)
i can't for the life of me figure out what kind of gun it goes to. i've never seen anything like it before. the front of it is sort of bent down a little bit like it fits into a groove just like an ak-47 receiver top cover. there is a serial number on the inside. (i didn't write it down)
it looked just about brand new. the wood had a high gloss finish. seemed like a really thick coat of poly.
we also found a 1943 mauser from the same factory as the 1944 we found a while back. (mauser-werke in oberndorf)
what did this thing used to be part of?

Good Call Okie.. I wonder how many other Vz 52s made it to Iraq? They took an odd round round correct?

Czech rifles are named after their year of introduction (just like other commie rifles)
Vzor = year or 'model of' and is shortened to 'vz'. Back in the dark ages of the cold war, when nobody knew nothin', it was sometimes translated as Cz (for various reason, such as named after the factory, etc)
Vz or Cz, it means the same thing.

That rifle has an interesting gas system too...

the vz.52 fires the 7.62x45mm round, which sounds rather interesting to me, like an intermediate between the 7.62x39mm AK and 7.62x51mm Nato rounds
IIRC, there was also the vz. 52/57 rifle, which was basically the same gun chambered in the 7.62x39 round

Those handguards in unmessed with condition are pretty rare. If you can get it back legally, it'll be worth your while.
