I was looking at articles about the russian PSS Silent pistol and I got to thinking. what would be the legality for manufacturing "silent" piston-driven cartridges as an alternative for silencers? is there any laws concerning such a thing? I know it's hardly practical, but it is more effective at noise reduction than a silencer, albeit giving significantly less power and range
for those of you who don't know, the PSS silent pistol utilized special cartridges instead of a silencer. the powder charger propelled a piston inside the cartridge casing which struck the bullet and propelled it with a single kinetic impulse. the piston is then stopped by the case neck, and the gas is trapped inside the cartridge. thus there is no noise or smoke or flash. this creates a very silent weapon, but with limited power and effective range
Two SP-4 silent cartridges. The one to the right is after firing, and you can see the piston:

That's the kind of thing I kinda had to wonder. The range can't be very far for those rounds, and a knife is even quieter...

Speaking of silent guns and suppressors and what not: How effective is the suppressor sold for Walther P22's??? I am toying with the idea of getting one simply because they are pretty neat but I don't know a great deal about them. I'm hearing and reading through the grapevine that that are a pane in the ass to acquire and expensive. Anyone have one or dealt with one?

On the Walther P-22's.
I have one, with a Tactical Innovations T-63 Refit (Has the T-65 endcaps and baffles, but has the registered tube of the 63). It uses th Tac Inovations 1/2x28 TPI adapter to attach. I rather like it, pretty nice little thing. You do have to go thru a Class 3 dealer, and fill out a form 4, and wait for your taxstamp. Final price with the Walther if you have a good dealer, in the 800-1000 range with stamp. About 300 +Tax for the pistol, 250+SalesTax+ATF Tax Stamp (200) for the can.
A bit of paperwork, a lot of waiting, and a thourough background check.
Also limited by state, as well as county and city. So check your local laws before you start shoppin. A local dealer should be able to help you out with your states laws and the CLEO signatures, but be careful if they are in another county/city, can still have hassles they arnt used to.

And by the way, Enigma's is very quiet. You hear the hammer fall, the brass hit the ground, and the bullet hit the pumpkin. That's all. :) I gots to get me one ot these. :2pistol::thumbup:

You would really need to delve into state and federal law to determine the definition of a firearm.
expect to find something along the lines of ....any device designed to propel a missle by means of blah, blah, blah.
/I had a nail gun that used butane...as loud as a ruger single 6 in .22
