This is under construction .

AKs come in two basic types, milled and stamped.
Milled have a monolithic one piece reciever. Most ,with a few exceptions have a barrel that is screwed into the reciever.
Stamped reciever AKs have the barrel pressed and pinned into the front trunnion, and the trunnion is riveted into the stamped sheet metal reciever.

WHAT SHOULD I LOOK OUT FOR IN AN AK?

The most common problems are canted sights or gas blocks.
This is due to poor quality control by the Romanians and the monkeys at Century arms.
A good way to check for this,if the dealer lets you, is to pull the cover off, remove the recoil spring, bolt and carrier, then remove the gas tube. Look through the rearsight block and make sure the rearsight block, the gasblock and front sight line up.If the dealer won't let you do this, sighting down the weapon from the front will work to some extent also.

On a used AK,or a kit, a quick look at how far over the front site is. If it is all the way to one side , that can be a warning flag.

WHAT ABOUT CHROME BORES?

The Yugos do not have them, all the others do.
Most Yugos on the market now are Century builds, with new U.S. barrels without chrome linings. For the average shooter, the semi auto versions, mostly just used at the range, get along just fine without chrome.

HOW IS THE WASR DIFFERENT THEN OTHER AKs?
They come in two flavors, low cap and high cap.

All WASRs are imported as single stack 10 rnd AKs. The ones converted to Hi cap then have the magwells hogged out to accept Hi-cap mags. They do not have dimples in the side of the reciever as other AKs do. Instead they have small steel plates welded into the magwell.
They have the correct no. of U.S. parts added to make them comply with ATF rules.
The mags in these tend to flop around a bit more then the dimpled reciever AKs,but they work as well, with the possible exception of drum mags. If the flop bothers you ,I suggest using Bulgarian polymer mags,as they tend to fit tighter.

WHAT CALIBERS DO AKs COME IN?
7.62x39
5.45x39
7.62x54R
7.62x51
5.56
8mm.
The first two calibers are common, the others less so.

WHAT ARE SAIGAS, ARE THEY AKs?

Yep, pretty much so. Just in Sporter configuration, and using low capicity magazines. They can be converted to standard AK configuration, with a bit of work, and adding the correct number of parts to comply with ATF rules.

CAN I CHANGE OUT THE FURNITURE ON MY AK?

Yes you can, with the exception of underfolders. Once an underfolder, always an underfolder. But most furniture will exchange from one type to another, with a little fitting.
Also with the exception that milled buttstocks do not fit stamped AKs and vice a versa.

HOW DO I ASSEMBLE AN UNDERFOLDER?

IF I BUY A KIT AND RECIEVER,WHO CAN BUILD IT FOR ME?

On the Saigas, atleast in .223 and 7.62x39, a cartrage guide needs to be added to allow for proper feeding, the stock ak mags will allow the the nose of the projectile to dive, thus a feed guide must be installed for non saiga magazines to work. Any stock feed guide can be used from any parts vendor, or one can be made. Here is a link to a good guide for conversion.

Also http://forum.saiga-12.com has LOTS of cool folks who can help with parts and knowledge about converting Saigas back to their evil intended appearance. Saigas are manufactured on the same assembly line as the AK-103 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AK-103) and can be converted back to look like them. They can also look like this (http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/6829/saigapic4xb0.jpg), or this (http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7977/leftfull1gb.jpg) (shown with a Wieger 5.56 magazine).
