some of you remember my refinishing thread on my K98k byf42

I have a picture taken of it and it's accesories for your viewing pleasure.

And I put 50 rounds through it at Quantico yesterday-- it shoots good.

If you want me to repost the refinishing thread (or the M44 refinish thread)let me know.

XO, man it turned out very nice. Can I get a couple of close ups on that? Nice fallshirmjaeger helmet also...that a repro or original?

Ya just need an repro sling and sight hood and you will be 100% in business.

Close ups of the K98k

The bayonet was an original 1943 as well

The sight hood is also pictured here, original but blurry

The sling is as it came with the rifle-- original probably but also probably not WWII issue

really?

Numrich had it listed as a Mauser front sight protector

ah well

Numrich makes mistakes all the time XO, return it to them...they know they screw up. A VZ-24 is a mauser, it didn't say German K98 front sight hood though I bet.

Here is what you need on a 1942 barrel. $5.95

on an older (pre war) k98 not cut for a sight hood, you need this.

Were your markings painted white when you got it or did you add it? My 1943 BYF is cut for a hood my other one is cut too.

Very impressive XO. Could you tell me what you did to make your stock look that nice. I did not get to read your earlier thread.

I'll repost the thread a little later when I get some time.

But the short version is:

Degreased the stock using calcium carbonate and degreaser (Old fashioned whiting) then cleaned with mineral spirits until all the grease/oil was out of the stock

then sanded progressively from 120 grit to 800 grit and a sanding block, then moistening the stock with a damp rag and taking down the whiskers with 800 grit.

then I applied a coat of Formby's tung oil (low gloss is what I use for military stocks) to the stock with my fingers..rubbing it in until it was warm to the touch and rubbed until was almost dry-- all with my fingers

letting it dry overnight, then taking it down the next day with 0000 steel wool and a clean cloth to get rid of wool fragments, and applied another coat.

I did this for 10 successive coats..you can do 20-30 or until you think the stock looks good. Sometimes I soak the stock in peanut oil first for a week or two to saturate the wood with oil and then let it dry before I apply the tung oil.

Then I applied a coat of Linseed Gold to the stock for final finish
