Great rifle. Unground mum means it was probably a capture rather than a surrender. Does the sight have the anti aircraft wings?

What's a mum? The flower stamp? Who ground them on surrender?

SSwee, it was part of the surrender agreement, that mum is like the Emperor's emblem and his property and he is a god, blah blah blah. I can't remember the whole story, but yes, we ground off the mums from what we captured after the war.

Even though I'm not into the Japanese small arms, that I would hold close with pride and joy!

No. Not that I can tell. I'm not sure what I'm looking for. There is also no gaurd for the front sight, and I read somewhere that these had a wire mono-pod, which there is none. The very front metal stock band has a hole for the cleaning rod, but no hole in the stock. It does, however, have the sheetmetal bolt cover that was thrown away by most Japanese solders.

Also there is some writing on the butt, and on the sling that I am very curious about if someone knows, or has a wife, or friend that may know Japanese.

Be sure and check the arsenal symbol and the serial number on the left side of the receiver if it's still readible. Several gun forums such as gunboards have a section on arisako rifles with a chart for those markings to tell you who and when it was made. The japs ground off the mums on surrender rifles as a rule before they handed them over and we were supposed to grind off any intact mums we found on captured rifles, but in those days military could bring war trophies back home such as jap rifles, swords, as well as the german
stuff too. A lot of our boys didn't agree with saving the emperor face or altering a war torphy so they carried them back as is. That's a plus for someone who has one of those now since it's worth a lot more. It will be interesting to see what the translation is on the yellow markings on the stock and sling. I remember reading something about rifles issued to school cadets for training having some type of yellow markings on them, but being where it was captured would rule that out. I guess next you need to clean and check it out and do some range time to see how it shoots if everything functions correctly on it.

I especially like the picture with the neighbors house downrange.

Seriously though, that'sa really cool piece of history! I've often thought about getting into the Jap rifles. It seems to be quite an addiction for those who delve into it.

You can tell by the rough cut stock down by the grip area.
You should talk to jarjar in the japanese rifle section at surplusrifleforum.com

Da man know his $#!t

I don't think that the late war issued 99 had the AA wings

Awesome rifle! Later models of the Type 99 were not issued with some of the bells and whistles such as the AA wings and monopods. Like others have said, the Japanese forum over on Gunboards will have some answers for you. Some good, knowledgable folks over there.

I did some reserch, and found some stuff. and its what they call a "transition rifle".
Its a series 24, type 99. Manufactured at Kokura Army Armory. They never did have the things that I thought were missing because of lack of steel, and to increase manufacture capacity. It does appear to have a chromed barrel, though it was very dirty, and has some rust just towards the end. I don't think its bad though.

I still don't know what year it is exactly. I know its towards the end, but not at the end. I'm a little confused, but it seems there are conflicting records, or reports concerning years. Also another thing that makes it hard is the fact that thier caleder is diferent than ours.
More updates later.

Here's a page that can help. Graf & sons has 7.7 Arisaka ammo
http://www.radix.net/~bbrown/japanese_markings.html
http://www.grafs.com/ammo/239

The mum on mine was ground off. I added the bolt cover, sling, cleaning rod and mono-pod. All aftermarket.

Cool rifle for anyone to get, congrats.

Got the Translation, My Freind says the writing on the stock says

LIVE 30128

The writing on the sling says

LIVE 1208

She says the first charecter is Chinese the rest are Japanese. She thinks it the the soldier's serial number and the why the word LIVE would be written there is unknown.
